Chapter 5 – Norfolk and Surgery

At first, the crew of the Pearl was hesitant to follow a blind Captain, but he’d proved himself several times in the week it took them to reach their destination. The Pearl herself seemed to help endear him to the rest of the crew, and attitudes changed completely. In fact, by the time the rest of the crew had anchored the galleon, stowed the treasure on the island and transferred the Spanish crew and themselves back to the Pearl, the men who had sailed under Jack for the trip were confused when Jack automatically gave the helm to Will upon his arrival onboard.

When Will returned to the Pearl, he noticed a change for the better in Jack. He also felt the Pearl’s mood change as he took the helm at the island, so he had Jack take the helm every night to keep her happy. It also kept Jack busy. He seemed to forget his problems at the helm, more self-confident, his hair thrown back, face tilted up into the wind. The smile on his face told Will more than anything that he’d done the right thing by keeping Jack on board permanently. He did wish that the changes in Jack remained with him when he was not at the helm.

The Pearl glided into Norfolk harbor and anchored in a good position to leave quickly if needed. After a small argument about trying to put Jack in the longboat before it was lowered, they lowered the boat and Jack Wil Will climbed down. Will was wearing a small bell hanging from his belt at Jack’s insistence. When the longboat pulled in to the shore, Will dragged it onto the beach and tried to help Jack out by habit, though Jack refused, deftly cutting around him. “So that’s why you had me wear the bell: So that you could avoid me.” He chuckled.

“That too, I suppose. However, I don’t take to being led around, so that bell will keep me movin’ in the right direction. So don’t worry about me. Just worry about findin’ that doctor.”

They walked up the dock area to the street and Will hailed a carriage. “Dr. Sherwood’s office.” He gave him the address, and the carriage started moving. When they arrived, Will paid the driver while Jack got out and stood next to the carriage, waiting patiently for Will. Will exited the carriage and walked straight ahead, as the carriage had parked directly outside the door to the doctor’s office. Upon knocking, they were greeted by a woman who immediately wanted to help Jack into the office. As she grasped his elbow, he began to shake while trying to get away from her. Will stopped her from keeping hold of the elbow, and had her lead the way into the office, Jack picking up the rear, following the bell at Will’s waist. She led them to a room with many instruments in it including a table in the center. The room was quite bright. They sat and waited in a couple of chairs along one wall.

The doctor entered the room and introduced himself, shaking hands with Will, but when he reached for Jack’s hand, the old pirate flinched away at the first touch. “It’s going to be difficult to work on you if you flinch away even for a handshake. However, we’ll just have to work around it.” He went to the cupboard and returned with a bottle, carefully putting it into Jack’s hand. “Drink some of that. A nice, big swig. It’ll relax you enough that I can operate, and dull the pain besides.”

Jack opened the bottle and sniffed it. “What is it? It smells like laudanum.”

“It is. But unless you are calm enough, I won’t touch your eyes with a knife. You’re way too jumpy right now. So take a nice large swig so that we can hopefully get your vision back.” Jack upturned the bottle and took a chug, making a fa

Will cocked his head. “So it’s not a certainty? He said he can see dark and light.”

“Yes, but there are never guarantees, and on the off-chance that something does go wrong, I would hate to give false hopes.” He turned to Jack. “How long have your eyes been closed like that, and how old are you?”

“It’s been five years. I’m forty-five years old, more or less.”

“Exactly. Who knows what has been going on in your own system during that time. And at your age, that could be anything. However, I can guarantee at least to have your eyes open. But we won’t know for a few days if you can actually see through them.”

They waited a little while for the medicine to take effect. Finally, Jack mumbled something, his head flopping down, chin to his chest. When Will asked him what he said, he responded. “M’head’s heavy. Wan’ t’lay down.” He tried to get up and fell back into the chair.

Will tentatively took him by the arm. No reaction. “He’s ready, doctor.” Together they moved Jack onto the table.

Jack woke up to darkness. Bringing his hands to his face, he felt thick layers of bandages covering his eyes. He knew he was in a bed, and that the bed was on land. “Whelp!”

The voice was not very far away. “Huh? Oh. Sorry Jack. I must have dozed off.”

“How did it go?” Jack sounded nervous.

“The doctor said that there was no actual damage done to your eyes.” Will’s voice seemed to say more.

“But?”

“He said that you may lose the sight in one of your eyes in a few years. He said there was a film of some kind in your right eye. But he said that you should be able to see out of it till it gets bad.” Will watched Jack for his reaction.

“And the other eye?”

“He said that one was fine. You should have nearly the same vision that you used to have in it, adjusted for age, of course.” He kept watching him.

Jack smiled. “So I should be able to see when the bandages come off?” His voice was cracking. It was obvious that the news made him want to cry with joy.

Will truly wanted to hold him; to let him cry into his chest. But he didn’t dare, for fear that Jack might hurt himself. “Are you all right?”

“Yes.” He sat up, feeling his body with his hands. “Whelp, where the blazes are my clothes, and why am I wearing this nightshirt?” He seemed panicked.

“Oh. The doctor wanted you to be clean, so he had me change you.”

“Then you know I’m dead.” Jack bent his head down, sobbing.

Will took one of Jack’s hands in his, and Jack pulled free right away. “Jack, you’re not dead. And I still love you.”

“How? How can you love me? I can’t give you anything like what I did before. How can anyone love a freak such as I’ve become?” He leaned over onto his side, curled in fetal position. “Lad, find yourself someone else to love. I don’t deserve it, and I don’t want it.”

“No, Jack. Other than you and the Pearl, there is no one that I love, or could ever love. And I always loved YOU, not...” His voice faltered. He couldn’t even imagine what Jack was going through.

“Whelp, do you remember when we first met?”

“Yes, Jack. And I know what you’re going to say, and I don’t care. I don’t see you as any less of a man, nor any less of a lover. We’ll just work around it...once you’ll let me touch you. And I promise that no one else will ever know.”

“But you’ll know. And I can never take back my comments to you from back then. They’ve haunted me for five years, lad. Ever since it happened to ME. So how can you tell me that you love an old eunuch?”
