Chapter 4 – Dinner, Nightmares, and Revelations
As the weeks went by, Jackie’s memory wasn’t coming back, but Will was so good to her that she didn’t care what she’d been “before.” Will bought an entire wardrobe for her, stopped drinking, and started creating the most magnificent swords and other items of his life. His wardrobe changed to match hers in quality, as people from all around heard about the Turner excellence. Everyone noticed the change in him, and when Commodore Norrington complimented him and asked what had caused things to turn around for him, Will explained that he’d found a woman that he loved and wished to marry and who loved him back. Norrington congratulated him heartily, saying that he thought she was much too good for Will, and jovially invited them to dinner. It was a genuine invitation, Will knew, and he just couldn’t resist accepting.
Will and Jackie arrived at the Norrington residence like aristocrats, dressed elegantly in complimentary garb. The butler ushered them into the parlor, where James was waiting, brandy snifter in hand. He bowed as Jackie made her curtsey, amazed at her beauty and quite certain that he hadn’t seen her around Port Royal. Will introduced her as Jacqueline, and James kissed her hand. James asked what they would like to drink, and Will declined. “I’ve given up liquor. I don’t need it with Jacqueline around. I find she intoxicates me quite enough.”
“I can understand that.” He asked Jackie what she would prefer to drink.
“Rum, if you please.”
Norrington quirked an eyebrow but nevertheless poured the drink and handed it to her. She sipped it like the fine lady she appeared to be.
As Elizabeth entered, Will could have sworn that the temperature of the room dropped several degrees. He told her how lovely she was and kissed her hand. Elizabeth got her own brandy, but seemed to drink it a little fast. James asked her if she was all right, and she mumbled something about it being a little warm in the room. It went on with Elizabeth being “cordial” to Will and Jackie, but both could tell she was very upset that they were there.
When dinner was served, they all retired to the dining room. James seated Jackie and Will seated Elizabeth, though Elizabeth balked a little before she gave in and let him seat her. Dinner was delicious, the tension was, however, quite high, and nobody ate very much.
After dinner, they retired to the parlor again, and Will mentioned that he’d saved enough for a nice cottage that Jacqueline had fallen in love with.
Elizabeth coughed. “Do you mean to say that Jacqueline is staying with you at the smithy?”
“In a sense. She is, indeed staying at the smithy, but there is nothing untoward going on.”
Jackie nodded. “Will has been quite the gentleman.”
The conversation and pleasantries went on for a while longer, with Will announcing very proudly that he’d just received an order for a sword from Philadelphia in the Americas.
James nodded. “Apparently, word of the excellent quality and craftsmanship of your blades is getting out. Indeed, I have shown my Turner blade to several of the upper echelon of the Royal Navy, and I expect you should be receiving many orders from England very soon now.”
“I thank you, Commodore.”
By the end of the evening, Elizabeth had retired early, having imbibed entirely too much brandy out of anger and jealousy. James and Will had become quite good friends, and James mentioned on the side to Will not to forget to invite him and Elizabeth to the wedding. “She’ll get over her jealousy. After all, it was she who decided to leave you for me.”
“WHAT?! She told me it was at her father’s insistence.”
“No. Old Weatherby had indeed wished that she would marry me instead, but she decided that she did not wish to be a blacksmith’s wife after all. Or a pirate’s, for that matter.” He grinned. “I could never see you as a pirate, Will, whatever your father may have been.”
“Thank you, Commodore.”
Will and Jackie left shortly thereafter, choosing, on the way home, to take a walk on the beach near the docks. Will stopped them near a palm tree and bent to his knee in the sand. “Jacqueline, I love you. You know that I have loved you since I first truly met you.” He produced a diamond ring. “We’ve known each other for only a short time, but please, Jackie, if you will do me the honor, I want you to be my wife.”
Jackie stared at the ring. The diamond had to have been no less than half a karat. “It’s beautiful, Will! But you didn’t have to spend so much on me!” She tried on the ring, which fit. “Will, I’ve loved you since I set eyes on you in that tavern, but I didn’t know my own feelings. Yes...yes, I will. I’ll marry you.”
They went home to the smithy and cuddled in the bed till they fell asleep.

It was nearly two months after Will brought her home that the nightmares started. Strange nightmares...Jackie would wake in a cold sweat, clutching Will as if only he could save her life. Will held her and rocked her gently till she stopped shaking. “What was your dream about, my love?”
“It was horrible. There was this ship...I was standing on the deck at the rail, waving a sword around, and two men shot me in the chest and I fell in the water.”
Will kissed her forehead gently. “Well, you’re quite alive, and I can’t picture you with a sword. However, I wouldn’t mind making you a lady’s dagger. I’ve been thinking about that for some time now. I want you to be safe when you go out without me.”
The next night, when she woke up screaming as if she were in agony, she described a dream in which there were men all around, holding her while someone branded her arm.
Every night thereafter she had the nightmares. From strange, shadowy faces that she didn’t recognize to being stabbed through the heart by a skeleton with a big hat. After each nightmare, Will would soothe her, gently massaging her back and rocking her like a babe until she fell asleep in his arms, then he would lay them both down and keep his arms around her until he fell asleep with her.
When she described a dream of being hanged, Will wondered again about Jack Sparrow. /But how could this beauty be Jack? It’s impossible./ *So are skeletal pirates.* /Perhaps she’s Jack’s daughter./ *Then why would she dream of things that have happened to Jack?* /I’ll have to think about that./

The morning of the wedding dawned bright and clear. Will had chosen Norrington to be his best man, and Norrington had gone to Governor Swann and talked him into giving “Jacqueline Smythe” away. When Weatherby met Jackie and saw how beautiful she was, he was glad that he’d agreed. Elizabeth was enraged with jealousy. Not only was her husband going to be Will Turner’s best man, but her own father was going to give away “THAT WOMAN.” James had to lock her in her room so that she couldn’t disrupt the wedding.
The wedding was beautiful. Jackie’s gown was stunning. Norrington had his butler dress Will so that he’d be perfect as well. The Bishop performed the wedding as if a duke were getting married; Will had become VERY popular, and there were several nobles in attendance from many of the local islands.
“I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss the bride.”
Will and Jackie faced each other and Will pulled her in for their kiss, both of them with their eyes closed. Quite suddenly, in the middle of the kiss, Jackie’s eyes flew open and she pulled away abruptly. “Blood Hell! Whelp! What in all Hades is going on?!”
