AAF FIVE
AN: Ok this is the real chapter five I hope this makes up for my unintentional cock up. My chapters are normally number coded. Sorry that it ended up a bit spoilt. Oh well, hopefully this will make up for it, I hope.
An alternative fate
A week later Anakin came running into the apartment he shared with Padme, he was followed by a grinning Obi-wan, who entered at a more subdued pace. Padme came out of her office area and noticed her husband was acting like the teenager he had once been while Obi-wan was grinning in amusement at his best friend’s overjoyed antics.
Padme turned to address Obi-wan “he passed didn’t he, and has been knighted?” Obi-wan grinned proudly “not only that, you’re now in the presence of the Jedi council’s newest master and member.” Padme squealed in delight and took Anakin into a loving hug and planted a kiss on his mouth before gushing “oh Ani you finally did it, you got your wish, I’m so proud you.”
Obi-wan snickered in amusement when Anakin blushed brightly. Anakin playfully glared at his best friend and now former master. Obi-wan smiled “so Ani what does it feel like to finally be a Jedi knight as well as a master?” Anakin grinned “well, Obi-wan it feels good, I now feel I have more influence in the council’s dealings which makes a nice change, plus I also get to interact with Master Yoda and Windu on a closer basis.”
Obi-wan nodded “you should feel that way, because you do have more of a say now that you’re a master. What I couldn’t discuss with you before, I’m now thankfully free to do so.” He added “it also means you have full access without being chaperoned in the archive section. Plus your missions are not restricted; you are now eligible to take the level of mission I also take, alone, or with me.”
Obi-wan had taken to calling Anakin Ani when they weren’t in the presence of the council or other Jedi almost six years ago. He was that comfortable with his former padawan to address him with such informal ease. Anakin grinned gleefully “and I’m no longer permitted to call you master, I’m more then entitled to use your given name, which I assure you I prefer over the term master any day.” Obi-wan nodded “true and calling you Ani doesn’t feel wrong and out of place and so informal like it once did as your master.”
Padme asked “so when do you plan to take on your own padawan Ani?” Anakin replied “not for few years yet, I decided I want to become more accustomed to not being a padawan my self first. The council agreed with my request. Besides I don’t feel I would be able to give my full and undivided attention to a youngling, during this blasted war.” Obi-wan added “naturally he’s got time to adjust; he after all has barely left his role as a padawan behind. I’m sure he will be ready and a great master when he decides the time is right.”
Anakin grinned and reached into the pocket of his robes and took out a slim rectangular box, women used to store their jewellery. Anakin smiled shyly and handed the box to Obi-wan. “I feel this is should belong to you, it’s because of you that I am no longer permitted to wear it, thank you Obi-wan.”
Obi-wan eyed his former padawan thoughtfully, before he carefully opened the box. Its contents made his breath catch in his throat. He swallowed the lump that had suddenly painfully dislodged its self in his throat. For there in the box lined in deep blue velvet, lay Anakin’s padawan braid, just recently been cut off, confirming his newly granted status as a Jedi knight.
Obi-wan suddenly felt his eyes begin to burn with oncoming tears, tears caused by this overwhelming and loving gesture that had been bestowed upon him. So this was what all those other past master had felt, or maybe something surely akin to, when their padawan’s had finally left the safety of under their wing and been granted their own knight and adult hood.
Padme eyed Obi-wan and could tell he was overwhelmed, not that she could blame him of course. He had been give the one true possession Anakin could truly claim had been his; it had been a huge part of Anakin since he was nine years old. She noticed the look Obi-wan shot Anakin when he looked up. It was completely loving it was tinged with adoration.
It was then, that Padme suddenly became aware, seriously aware of how Obi-wan thought of her husband. He was in love; he was in love with her Ani. And she knew for a fact Obi-wan had played a part in persuading the council to allow Anakin and her to remain married. She realised Obi-wan had done it regardless of how much it would break his heart in the process. ~oh poor Obi-wan~ she thought, ~how can you be so selfless? How I wish your heart would not be shattered~
Obi-wan smiled at Anakin and told him with shining eyes “thank you Ani, it was incredibly thoughtful of you. Very few former padawan’s honour their former masters with the gift of the symbol of their apprenticeship. Most on the night of their knight hood go off gallivanting in the club district of Courscant and get drunk and lose their braids force knows where. Others throw it out, or burn it.”
Obi-wan snapped out of the direction his thoughts were going, thoughts of how he spent his night of his knight hood. He kept his braid. And was one of those many whom went off gallivanting in the club and red light district, and got rat assed drunk. He had no one to celebrate with; he had no living master or someone special to give his braid to. He would not allow his Ani to let his own pass without doing something special.
Obi-wan sighed and closed the box carefully and handled it as if it were the most precious possession he owned, in truth it truly were. He placed it into his pocket of his robes. He then turned to both Anakin and Padme and placed a fake smile on his face, a smile only Padme saw though, naturally she wasn’t in politics for nothing now.
“Ok you two lets go and do something to celebrate, then afterwards you two can have your own form of celebration can’t you?” Padme knew that Obi-wan knew what sort of celebration they would have. That which made her feel guilty, knowing Obi-wan had no one, because she had his choice of love, plus the older master tended to follow the rules where Anakin didn’t.
She realised then and there that Obi-wan truly was a decent, most probably one of the last decent human beings on the planet since the start of the war. She realised Obi-wan truly had to have genuinely been deeply in love with her husband, to endure the heart break he must endure every time he saw them together, or when they talked of their unborn child. He endured a broken heart so the man he loved could live happily. Obi-wan Kenobi was truly an amazing man, he was truly selfless.
