CHAPTER 5

Treasure stood staring at the closed door for a minute thinking, then walked over to the bed and plopped herself down. ‘How in the world did I get myself in this situation, and more importantly, how am I going to get myself out,’ she wondered out loud.

She knew when Jack returned she would be asking him what was going to happen to her. Surely, being the gentleman he claimed to be, he would take her to the nearest port and drop her off. If he was willing to protect her from the rest of his crew of savages, then he must not mean her any harm and would set her free.

Anything else, in Treasure’s mind, didn’t make any sense. Treasure laid back on the bed, it was a lot softer than she expected. She closed her eyes and wondered why she ever let herself get talked into getting on any ship to begin with, but she knew the answer to that one.

Adventure, she was looking for Adventure.

Being offered a job as cook on the now sunken vessel seemed like a great adventure at the time. After all she had known most of the crew since she was a little girl, and they were all friends with her father when he was alive. They had promised to look out for her if she agreed to be their cook. She had jumped at the chance and for a while it had been a lot of fun.

Fun until Jack and his band of pirates decided to sink the ship and steal everything, including her. Treasure understood why the captain of the other ship had wanted to kill her, for her own sake. Still she didn’t have any desire to die, and she had been terrified when that sword was at her throat. She was glad to be alive, and yes Jack did save her life, in a way.

Treasure smiled thinking about Jack. He was a handsome man, that much she couldn’t deny. She liked the way everyone jumped when he gave an order. Was it respect, or was it fear, maybe a little of both? She did realize, she wasn’t afraid of Jack. Maybe she should be, but she wasn’t. Treasure wasn’t afraid of much anyway.

Her father had raised her to be strong. Her mother passed away when she was about 3 years old, so she was a bit of a tomboy growing up. She learned how to take care of herself, but she was still a lady, when the need presented itself. She would deal with Jack when he returned. She would tell him what she wanted and she fully expected him to comply with her wishes. After all, there was no real reason for him to hold her captive here on his ship, and he did promise no harm would come to her. Treasure smiled to herself thinking she had the upper hand in this matter. With that thought, she drifted off to sleep.

Treasure awoke to find a gentle hand stroking her hair. She jerked away and opened her eyes to see Jack looking down at her.

“Hello luv,” Jack said with a warm smile. He looked so sincere and sweet at that moment. Treasure had to force herself not to reach up and touch his smiling face.

“I brought you some eats,” Jack said pointing over to the desk. Treasure looked over and saw a tray of something. It looked like a lot of food.

“I didn’t know what you would like,” Jack confessed, “so I brought a bit of everything.”

Treasure sat up and looked at Jack and smiled weakly, “thank you,” she said politely.

Treasure was feeling rather hungry after all and starving herself was not to her best advantage. Jack stood up and took her hand. Treasure didn’t protest as he led her over to the desk and the tray of food. She sat down in the chair Jack had obviously prepared for her and picked up a spoon. Jack hopped up and sat on the desk next to her, watching her intently. Treasure took a spoonful of soup and swallowed slowly. It tasted pretty good. She looked up at Jack. He was watching her every move. Treasure decided now was as good a time as any.

“So, are you going to take me to the nearest port and drop me off.” she asked between sips of soup.

“There’s no hurry, luv.” Jack answered her.

“We have enough supplies on board to keep us out to sea for a few weeks. We’ll drop you off eventually, if that’s what you really want.”

“Of course that’s what I want,” Treasure exclaimed putting her spoon down.
“You sink our ship and steal everything, including me and now you’re going to force me to stay on this ship for weeks before you’ll let me leave, and you have to ask if that’s what I want.”

“Calm down luv,” Jack said reaching out to stroke her hair. “You came aboard of your own free will. No one forced you.”

“Like I had a choice,” Treasure snapped back at him pulling her head out of his reach.

“By the way,” Treasure asked, her voice calming down and suddenly sounding very sweet, “what did you do with the crew from my ship, kill them?”

Jack laughed out loud, “Of course not, luv. We don’t kill, unless we have to. Killing gives us a bad reputation. We took the row boats from your ship and let the men go.”

Treasure shrieked, “You let them go…without me.” She stood up and slammed the spoon down on the desk.

“Well,” Jack said matter of factly, “you were sleeping so peacefully. I didn’t want to disturb…”

Treasure cut him off with a hard slap across his face. Jack felt the sting, but didn’t let it faze him.

“I don’t think I deserved that,” he said.

“Look,” Treasure said forcefully, “I demand you take me to the nearest port and release me.”

Jack eyes glared at her. He was not accustomed to taking orders from anyone, especially from a woman.

“Treasure, this is MY ship, and here I give the orders. You can make your stay with us as difficult or as pleasurable as you choose to, but until I decide when we make dock, you’re stuck with us as we are stuck with you.”

In spite of himself, Jack smiled at Treasure. She was a very lovely lady. A bit of a spitfire, but lovely none the less. Treasure saw the glare in Jack’s eyes and in spite of her strong nature, she backed away from his anger. Having him upset with her was not what she had in mind. After all, he was the only thing keeping her safe at the moment.

“I’m sorry Captain, I do apologize,” Treasure said softly, “This is your ship, please forgive me.”

She looked up at Jack with pleading eyes. Jack felt his heart skip a beat looking into her big brown eyes.

“It’s okay luv,” he said sweetly and smiled. The look in his eyes softened and the thought crossed Jack’s mind of how much he would like to be holding this woman in his arms right now. But ever the gentleman, Jack turned to leave.

“I will be back later,” he said over his shoulder as he stepped out the door and closed it behind him.

Treasure stood there for a minute staring at the door, not sure what to think. One minute he was looking at her as if he could wring her neck and the next like he wanted to kiss it. She had never dealt with someone like Captain Jack Sparrow before and wasn’t sure herself what she thought of him. She wanted him to leave, but then she couldn’t help but wonder what it would feel like to have him hold her in his strong arms. Treasure shook her head to get that thought out of her head. The thought drifted back though as she recalled how he looked at her before he left.

Jack knocked gently on the door when he returned, but didn’t wait for any reply before he walked inside the room. Treasure was sitting on the bed and looked at him as he swaggered inside. Jack was carrying another bottle of rum and offered it to her after he closed the door. Treasure hesitated for a second then took the bottle from him. She looked at the bottle then at Jack.

“Sorry luv, no glasses. Pirates drink from the bottle,” he explained.

Treasure tipped the bottle and took a long drink. She could feel the warm rum flowing down her throat and tasted the sweetness in her mouth. She handed the bottle back to Jack and he took a long draw emptying the bottle. He dropped the bottle to the floor and sat down on the bed next to Treasure.

“Now what,” she asked. Jack gave her a little smile and winked. “Well, I’m going to lay down here, close my eyes, and go to sleep,” Jack told her.

“Just like that,” Treasure asked.

“Aye, just like that,” Jack responded. “Unless there is something else you would like to do first.”

Treasure didn’t reply, but did notice Jack had a wicked little smile on his face. She laid down on the bed next to Jack, but as far on the other side of the bed and she could get.

“I don’t bite, luv,” Jack said with his eyes closed, “unless you want me to.”

Treasure ignored his comment and turned over to her side and closed her eyes. In spite of the nap she had taken earlier she felt rather warm and tired. It must be the rum she thought and drifted off to sleep.

Treasure awoke to bright sunshine coming in through the port window. She opened her eyes slowly. During the night, Jack had managed to get his arm wrapped around her waist and was sleeping soundly snuggled up against her. Treasure turned her head. His handsome face was just inches from her own.

‘Hmmm,’ she thought, ‘this is actually very nice.’ She turned her head and closed her eyes moving slightly closer to Jack. She felt his arm tighten around her. She liked the feeling.

“Good morning luv,” Jack whispered in her ear. Treasure turned toward Jack and looked into his dark piercing eyes. He looked at her intently and pulled her closer to him. He very gently let his lips brush against hers. Treasure knew she should pull away from him, even if she didn’t want to.

She pushed Jack back and moved as far away from him as she could get.

“Please don’t do this,” she begged Jack.

Jack looked at her intently, trying to read her thoughts. He could tell she wanted to be close to him, so why was she pushing him away?

“I won’t be playing your games lassie,” Jack said as he rolled from the bed and stood up.

Treasure was shocked that Jack actually stopped when she asked him to do so, but before she could say anything, there was a loud thud on the door.

“Captain,” a voice from the other side of the door called, “we need you on deck right away.”

“Aye, Jack replied straightening himself, “I be on me way.”

Jack grabbed his hat from the floor, shook it off and placed it on his head. Turning to Treasure still lying on the bed, “I’ll be back shortly darling, don’t go anywhere.”

Then he winked at her, turned and walked out the door closing it behind him.

Treasure just lay there thinking. ‘What in the world am I thinking? What in the world am I doing?’ But she knew already. No matter that Jack was a pirate, no matter that Jack had sunk the ship she had been on, stolen everything, and killed the captain. None of that mattered at the moment. All that mattered right now was that she was falling for this…this pirate and all she wanted was for him to walk back through that door.

‘I must be out of my mind,’ she said as reason took over her thoughts. ‘This can not happen,’ she told herself with determination. Her thoughts were determined, but her heart was thinking of Jack. She had liked the way he stood up to her, she admired his authority and he was so very handsome.

‘I wonder if he really likes me,’ she thought to herself, “or is he just using me for the moment.? And what possible game was he talking about?’

She recalled the look in his eyes. He looked so sincere and sweet. She didn’t want to believe that this pirate was just a pirate. She wanted to believe he was honest and that he was a gentleman at heart. She didn’t know, but when he returned, she was going to find out, somehow.
