CHAPTER SIX: Dark Horizon
The sound of the cabin door splintering apart caused both Jack and Elizabeth to sit up in the bed. The doorway was filled with several, large masculine figures. Their identities concealed by shadow. Elizabeth pulled the sheet up over her breasts and crawled back against the headboard. Jack put a protective hand across her while the other reached over the side of the bed, searching for his pistol.
One of the men lunged for the bed, landing on Jack and quickly pinning his hands to his sides. With superior size, the man dragged Jack off the bed and a second man joined the effort to contain the naked, struggling Captain. "Take him out," a gruff voice in the dark bellowed out.
"Jack!" Elizabeth screamed as her husband disappeared in the shadows.
"Her too," came that voice.
One of the shadowmen reached forward and encircled her wrist in his grasp. She inhaled sharply as he tugged her off the bed with one pull. She landed on her knees, the sheet coming away from her body. Laughs and whistles from the dark surrounded her as her captor caught her other wrist and hauled her to her feet, as naked as Jack had been. Elizabeth kicked at him futilely until another of the men took hold of her ankles. They carried her out on deck.
The moonlight had not quite disappeared outside. Ghosts of faces began to attach to their assailants. She was brought to Jack's side. She could see that they'd had to add a third man to hold him there. His kohl-lined eyes flashed to hers, a mixture of relief and concern. The man who held her feet released her and moved away while the one who held her wrists brought her backside against his front, a little too closely for her comfort considering her nudity. His hands slid to hold her upper arms, fingers digging in hard. She winced.
"Oy, ease off of 'er," Jack barked. He was backhanded across the face for his trouble.
"Indeed, Sparrow is right. Kindly do not bruise my property," a new voice said. This one more refined sounding.
Elizabeth and Jack's eyes locked, each recognizing the voice unmistakably. They turned in synch as a tall, beefy man loomed into view. Blonde hair with streaks of silver caught the light, cold blue eyes appraising Elizabeth's body, the great jagged scar across his left cheek stood out even in the dark; Gabriel Chase had found them.
"Elizabeth," he said calmly. "This was not the way I pictured our first time. How disappointing."
"She's married!" Elizabeth heard Jack shout.
Chase turned his attention to Jack. "To whom?"
Through the shadows, she saw the glint of gold of her husband's smile. "To me."
The look Chase gave her then made Elizabeth's blood run cold. "Easily remedied." Suddenly, he reached out and placed his hand between her legs. He squeezed her there, hard enough to force a scream from her lips. He rushed forward and covered her mouth with his own. Elizabeth thought she would throw up. Part of her hoped she did, given her current position.
Instantly, she heard a scuffle ensue. Several shouts, grunts, and thumps on the deck. In the next moment, her arms were released and Chase was propelled away from her. She wiped her mouth with the back of her hand and took a deep breath. Looking around, Elizabeth saw Chase's men littering the deck. Some were unconscious, some writhing in pain; most had blood upon them. Jack appeared before her, his eyes worried.
Elizabeth smiled at him. He touched her face gently with his fingertips. "Nobody touches Mrs. Captain Jack Sparrow, savvy?" He kissed her tenderly and then pulled back to look at her.
Suddenly, Elizabeth found her face sprayed with wet warmth. She looked to Jack. A large dark spot now stained the middle of his forehead and his deep brown eyes no longer held any life within them. He dropped to his knees before her, his face resting against her bare stomach.
"NO!!!" Her body shuddered involuntarily with shock and grief.
When Elizabeth looked over, Chase stood with a smoking pistol and a cruel smile. "Tis a shame about Widow Sparrow's husband, but I suppose at least the bright side is that now she is free to marry again."
She collapsed to her knees. Jack's dead eyes were now even with hers. "JACK!!!!"
******
"Elizabeth!" She heard his voice and felt someone shaking her. She sat straight up only to see Jack sitting there beside her in bed, holding on to her upper arms, looking concerned. She knew that they couldn't have been sleeping long for the moonlight in the windows was still rather pronounced and her hair was still damp from their earlier activities in the rain. She shivered as the night air caught the sheen of sweat currently coating her body.
"Jack! Oh God, Jack!" She burst into tears. Elizabeth kissed him roughly and then held him for all she was worth.
His arms came about her. Jack kissed her neck and began to rock her as she cried and shook in his embrace. "It's alright, Love. I'm here. Jack's got you."
"It was a mistake, Jack," she choked out. "I should never have married you!" He stopped rocking her and pulled away to look her in the face. She was crying so hard he would have been surprised if she could actually see him in return. "I didn't have anything left. Nothing that I cared about. Now I have you. And he'll take you from me, Jack. He will kill you." She hugged him again, this time it was her doing the rocking. "I should have seen this before. Oh God, oh God, what have I done? I've killed you too!"
Jack smiled and tightened his hold on her, somewhat touched that all this upset would be over a dream about losing him. "Lizzie, Lizzie, I'd no idea you'd miss me that much."
She pulled away from him, suddenly angry. Elizabeth began to wipe her cheeks with her hands, even as more tears fell. "Jack Sparrow, how dare you make fun of me at a time like…" He pushed her down against the pillows sending her hair fanning out around her. In the space of a breath, his hands were tight around her wrists, pinning her to the bed. His body had come to cover her own; his legs in between hers, preventing them from closing. She gasped in surprise and he took her open mouth in a hard kiss.
When their mouths parted, he nibbled at her lower lip. Jack saw another shiver go through her, but this one he knew to be different. He grinned.
Elizabeth's teary eyes met his own. The look in them sent a jolt straight to his groin and he began to harden. She felt him against her leg and rocked her hips to grind against him. "Please, Jack? I need to feel you. I need you inside."
Jack groaned and reached down to guide himself into her. A thrust of his hips sheathed him within her fully. He watched as Elizabeth took a deep breath and then seemed to relax. Her arms and legs slowly came to cradle him. His tongue and teeth worried at her nipples while she adjusted to him. Soon, he began to move. As he glided in and out of her body, her eyes held his, watching him. Elizabeth's hands came to his face, fingers tracing his skin. She sighed. Her thumbs moved to the middle of Jack's forehead. They rubbed a circle there and then her eyes closed, tears escaping the sides.
His hand went between them and he lightly touched her clitoris. Elizabeth's eyelids opened in surprise. Jack's eyes were serious when they met her own.
"I'm here, Lizzie. I'm right here."
"Don't go, Jack," she said quietly.
He shook his head and thrust deeply. Elizabeth moaned and her eyes seemed to darken. It was Jack's first sign that he was winning over the hold her nightmare had on her. He thrust again quickly. Her head tilted back. Her eyes fluttered shut. Her hands slipped down his back and firmly took hold of his buttocks.
Jack smirked and quickened his pace as he felt the familiar pressure building below. He knew she was close as well. Her inner walls began to grab at him hungrily. Her knees rose up beside his hips. He heard Elizabeth gasp and felt her arch into him just as his own release overtook him.
Jack lowered his head to her breast, rising and falling with her as she struggled to breathe normally again. When he looked at her face once more, she was studying him. Elizabeth's cheeks were flushed. She licked her lips unconsciously over and over again as she panted. Her eyes were trained on his.
He smiled and tucked a lock of hair behind her ear. "See, Love? I didn't go anywhere." Jack caught her eyes do a fearful glance to the door before resting on his own again. "Door's locked, Elizabeth. No one's getting in tonight."
Elizabeth cast her eyes downward. "The lock didn't stop them in my dream."
Jack rolled to the side and gathered her against his chest. "Alright then, tell me what happened?"
She sighed. "I had a dream that Chase killed you."
"Care to give me the details?"
"No. I'd rather not think about it."
He squeezed her to him. "It was just a nightmare. I'm fine. It's not going to come true."
Elizabeth was quiet for a few moments. Then, she spoke softly. "Jack? How did you meet Gabriel Chase?"
Jack looked to the windows. This was not a story that was going to ease her troubled mind. "Lizzie, you should go back to sleep."
She looked up at him. "Please?"
He exhaled loudly. Thinking a moment, Jack decided to be brief. "He tormented another young heiress; one that he hired me to abduct under false pretenses. I did me best to help her when I found out the truth but… it didn't exactly all work out for the best. Sweet Lass. It was a shame."
"What was her name?"
"Brigit Logan," he said sadly. With a tone of pride, he added, "She's the one that gave him that ruddy great scar."
Elizabeth smiled. "Good for her."
There was a long pause. Elizabeth's breathing became so steady that Jack was sure she'd fallen asleep. Just as he closed his own eyes, she quietly said, "Jack?"
"What is it, Love?"
"It's…" She exhaled. "It's stupid. Nevermind."
"Tell me anyway?"
She curled against his chest a little more. "Do you know any lullabies?"
He laughed. Her eyelashes brushed his chest as she closed her eyes in embarrassment. "Of course I do. What do you think? I was raised by wolves?"
Elizabeth leaned up on her elbow. "Not stupid?"
He shook his head. "How about Golden Slumbers?"
She seemed shocked. "You know Golden Slumbers?"
"Of course I do. Me Mum used to sing it to me."
She laid her head on his chest once more. "My nanny sang it to me when I'd have bad dreams."
"Not your mum?"
He felt her shake her head. "My mother died giving birth to me. I never knew her."
Jack held her tighter. "I'm sorry, Love. Mine lived until I was fifteen or so." He smiled at his memory of Hannah Sparrow. "She was a lot of fun. You'd have liked her." Elizabeth nuzzled against him.
Quietly, little more than a whisper, Jack began to sing.
"Golden slumbers kiss your eyes,
Smiles await you when you rise.
Sleep, pretty baby,
Do not cry,
And I will sing a lullaby."
Elizabeth kissed his chest. "Thank you, Jack," she said softly.
A flutter of eyelash on skin told him she'd closed her eyes again. He continued.
"Cares you know not,
Therefore sleep,
While over you a watch I'll keep.
Sleep, pretty darling,
Do not cry,
And I will sing a lullaby."

A loud pounding on the cabin door startled Jack and Elizabeth awake. Elizabeth pulled the sheet up over her breasts and crawled back against the headboard. Jack put a protective hand across her while the other reached over the side of the bed, searching for his pistol.
"Jack! Wake up!" Gibbs voice called from the other side of the door. Jack relaxed a little. "There be a ship on the horizon!"
He turned to Elizabeth. Her eyes were wide and her breathing rapid. Jack gently touched her face. "It's alright, Love. It's just Gibbs." She nodded and attempted to calm herself.
Jack got up from the bed and quickly dressed himself. He adjusted his weapons as he made for the door. Elizabeth had just left the bed. "Meet me up on deck?" She nodded again. When he left the room, she sat once more and waited for the trembling of her legs to subside.
******
Bounding out onto the deck, Jack turned as soon as he saw Gibbs and headed for him. "Well?"
"Have a look for yourself, Captain. She's a fair ways off yet, but it looks as if it might be the Talon."
Jack nodded in agreement with this assessment. "Marty," Jack barked out. "Me spyglass if you please. Come along. Toot sweet!" A moment later, the shortest member of the crew handed a telescope to Jack on his way to the rigging. Jack expanded its length and trained it on the ship in the distance. It was still too far away to read the markings, but he could see the flag it was flying.
"She seems to be running under Spanish colors."
"Can you see yet, Jack?"
"Give it a couple of minutes." Jack heard the door to his cabin open and shut but kept his sight trained to the ship on the horizon. Looking through his spyglass, he could finally see the ship's markings. Jack breathed a sigh of relief. "We can all relax a bit. It's not the Talon."
"No?" Gibbs said. "Well maybe it was that ship I saw at Tortuga and not…"
"Unfortunately, I doubt that's the case, Mr. Gibbs. She's on the wrong heading to have come from Tortuga. It's the Esperanza." He brought the glass down and smiled at Gibbs.
Gibbs returned it. "Movement ye scurvy dogs!" he shouted to the crew, moving away from Jack's side. "Look alive and prepare to intercept that vessel."
Elizabeth touched his arm. "The Esperanza?"
"It means hope. We’ve heard tell of this particular ship. My bet is they're running slaves to Bonaire." Jack smiled at her. "What say you, Love, eh? To a speck of honest pirating?"
Elizabeth's eyes widened a little. She cast a glance across the water to the other ship. Biting her lower lip, she returned her gaze to Jack. Moving her mouth near his ear, she whispered, "Yo ho."
Jack slipped a hand into Elizabeth's hair and held her to him as he kissed her.
