His arm shot out over her shoulder. A thick book from the top shelf gracefully flew down and nestled itself in his gloved hand.
“How did you do that?” Lexi forgot to keep the awe out of her voice as her fingers traced the spine of the book.
“Remember the music you spoke of?” He smiled down at her expression as she looked at the book. “The music reflects your emotions. Power is almost always unspoken. But that does not mean it does not have sound. Do as I do.” He opened his palm and looked over at the book he’d called earlier. It came to his hand and lightly set itself on his palm.
“I can do that no problem.” She shot her hand out and shot a glance at one of the books. It flew off of the shelf and smacked her hand…hard! She let out a little yip as her hand stung.
“Your emotions are in direct correlation to your magics. In other words the angrier you are the more its going to lash and whip about.” He moved his arms around her with her back to him. Jareth twisted his wrists and three orbs appeared in his hands, dancing from wrist to wrist, with him in complete control of them. “You see?” He whispered in her ear. “It isn’t so hard.” He held an orb in front of her face. “And look at the beautiful things inside.”
Lexi felt herself relax as she looked into the crystal orb in front of her nose. Inside was a lush field with butterflies flitting from flower to flower on the wind’s back, she could almost feel the breeze against her cheek. And then suddenly, she could. She could smell the flowers too. They were so fragrant. “This is so beautiful.” Lexi opened her eyes and they were standing in the field, flowers around her ankles.
Jareth bent beside her and plucked a flower up. He twirled it in his fingers before tucking it behind her ear. He watched her as she reached up and touched the petals of the bloom.
“It’s real.”
“Of course it is. What did you expect?”
“Poppies that make you fall asleep, maybe. Or for it to be made of light that my fingers would go right on through.” She giggled, “But it’s real.”
“I’ve set up the scene for you. What do you want to do with it?”
“I-I don’t understand.”
“Use your power, Alexia. Make this your own.” He waved his arm to show the field. “You used it on me earlier. Just try not to pick such a volatile emotion. Relax and picture what you want this to be.”
“This isn’t some trick to make me like you is it?” she looked at him suspiciously.
He chuckled. “If you didn’t like me, you would have never let me get this close to you, Alexia.” He was behind her again, moving her hair to one side. Lexi froze under his hands. “No, don’t bunch up now. Relax. Let the magic come to you.”
Lexi swallowed and closed her eyes, her skin tingling. In the silence she felt something light inside her. The music started music only she could hear. She trembled as the power of it flowed through her.
Jareth watched as the spring field became summer and sprouted trees that grew fast and tall. Then, in a blink of an eye, it became autumn with all its beautiful colors. The leaves fell from the trees and before they could hit the ground they became snow. It pooled around their feet, chilling but not freezing. He put a hand on her shoulder. “Open your eyes, my Alexia. See how your power has changed the world.”
The snow was still falling but now it had slowed and clung to the branches of the now bare trees.
“I did this?”
“Well it certainly wasn’t me. I was content with the field.” He frowned as she stepped away from him.
“The woods behind our house looked like this when the snow came. I used to play with Momma in it while Daddy was away.” Her fingers brushed over the cold bark of one of the trees.
“You miss her.”
She snorted and crossed her arms over her chest. “I didn’t expect you to be empathetic.”
“It shows on your face before you put that damnable mask on.” He scowled.
“What mask?”
“Why this one.” Jareth reached forward and pulled something away from her face. A copy of her face was now in his hands it looked haughty and defiant.
“You want real emotion?” she felt her anger rise. The ground around her feet turned to dried, cracked, earth.
Jareth waved his hand and they were suddenly back in the library. “That was lesson one." He turned away and strode out of the large doors. “Lesson two will begin at dawn. I suggest you get your sleep.”
Lexi looked outside a window and cursed as she saw the inky blackness of the night. That little Lesson had eaten up her afternoon! She glared down at her chain. “Either you let me go someplace where I can blow off some of this steam or I’m going to break you in half and then paint you pink. Got it?”
It edged toward the door and waited for her to open it. Lexi scowled, but followed her chain until it stopped at a large room. She peeked in and smiled. “Good chain. Trust you to find a gym here.”
She jumped in the air and flipped end over end, the rattle of her chain only egging her on. The mats that lined the floor were unlike any she’d ever encountered before. They weren’t too soft but they weren’t concrete either. She rolled her eyes while she stood on her hands and scissored her legs in the air. More magic. This place seemed to thrive off of it.
Lexi brought her legs together and twisted them, panting as she went up on one hand. She then cocked her head looking at the dress she’d been forced to wear.
Somehow it had accommodated itself to the activity she was now doing. Instead of the long skirt that brushed the tops of her feet, now the skirt was short and looked more like something you would see in a gymnastics tournament instead of in Pride and Prejudice.
“Huh.” She panted, “Maybe you aren’t so bad after all.” Putting both hands under her again, she sprang and landed on her feet. Her body buzzed with the use. She smirked. This felt good. She’d gotten out of practice since she’d been abducted. Lexi eyed the punching bag that hung from the rafters of the room. Now why would the king of the goblins have a punching bag?
She shrugged, deciding she didn’t care why he had them, but she was damn well going to make use of it. She ran at it and took a flying kick snapping the chain that suspended it. Well, there was no doubt she was still under par with her kickboxing. Lexi grimaced down at her fallen foe. Damn. How was she going to fix that? She whipped her brow on her shoulder and decided to try and use her power first.
Closing her eyes she imagined the bag as it had been. It swinging slightly suspended from the high rafters of the room, its chain unbroken. Music, like wind chimes sounded in her head as the picture became sharp and clear. When she opened her eyes, the punching bag was once again swinging slowly from its chain. Lexi smiled softly and turned, heading out and back to her library/room.
“That was rather well done.”
Lexi blinked and bit back a gasp. “Thank you. If you don’t mind my asking…”
She paused, and gulped. He was watching her. His eyes pinning her in place as if she were a bird, “Why do you have all this modern equipment in such a medieval castle? “
“It is my castle. I’ll have what I want in it.” He kicked her chain. “It’s letting you go further and further from the library.”
“Pure self preservation, I threatened to paint it pink.”
Jareth made a sound. A sound that had Lexi tilting her head to one side, a sound that could have been a cough or a sneeze….but come one since when do fairy kings sneeze? “Was that a snort of laughter, Oh Goblin King?”
“Not at all.” He said straightening. “You’re just hearing things, my Alexia.”
Lexi backed up. “I’m not your Alexia. In fact, you know what? Don’t call me Alexia!”
The side of his mouth quirked in a sexy smile as he slowly started walking forward. “But I just love the way your name sounds.”
Oh, boy. Lexi thought, lucky for me this is a nice and big- Her thoughts stopped abruptly as her back hit a wall. She blinked and noticed the room was now much smaller length wise than it was two minutes ago. “Oh my…a wall.”
Now he was in front of her and closing in. “Alexia. My Alexia.” It excited him the way she was pressed against the wall. “I trust you find your dress is accommodating?”
“Yes.” Why couldn’t she look away? He was just so close. Lexi tilted her chin up in defiance. “Don’t call me that.”
He was over her now, his leg between hers, pinning her to the wall. “You do not correct a king, Alexia.” He grabbed her wrists and forced them over her head, holding them there with one hand while the other tilted her face up to his own. “This is Lesson Two.” He said softly and claimed her lips with his own.
