Definitions (aka Getting all the boring shit out of the way for the rest of the story)
“Alright, so what exactly does is mean to be mates?” Brandi asked Max, curious as to what exactly she was to Marko.
“In order to understand what a mate is, you must first understand exactly what makes a person a vampire,” Max said with a tone that implied a history/science lesson was about to commence. Dwayne and Paul, being less involved in the situation than Marko and having less responsibility than David, groaned and walked out of the living room. Brandi barely noticed their exit, leaning forward to catch every word Max said.
“A vampire is a human body that is animated by a demon. There are two types of vampires, each with their own method of turning, although both methods are sparked by the ingestion of a vampire’s blood. Our kind has an easier transformation, with the blood being ingested and allowing the demon entrance to the body without the sudden shock of death. The demon will slowly kill the body however, which is why the craving for blood to continue animating the body becomes stronger. When the half-vampire drinks the death blood of a human for the first time, the body shuts down, making the demon the dominant force in the vampire. This method allows the vampire to keep a portion of their soul since there was never a true death to release the soul.
“The other method of turning a human involves draining the human until they are almost dead. They are then fed the vampire’s blood. It is absorbed into the body both during and after the human’s death. With the death of the human, the soul will depart, making the demon the only force inside the body, although the demon will have access to all memories the human had, since those are recorded on the brain itself.” Max paused for a moment as Dwayne and Paul returned bearing drinks. “Thank you boys,” he said as they set down a glass of water in front of him.
“So that’s where the whole digging out of the graves thing comes from?” Brandi asked as she accepted a can of beer. “So what does that have to do with mates?” she continued after Max nodded in confirmation.
“Well, mates occur when vampire’s find another vampire that is their perfect compliment. Every great once in a while there will be a trifecta of mates, but that is extraordinarily rare. But when the vampire’s find each other, they will claim each other. This results in both vampire becoming much more powerful and will also make it so that any other vampire either of them runs across knows that they are taken. It is unheard of for any vampire to attempt to steal another’s mate. The downside to this is that the vampires become dependent on each other. Being without your mate for too long will result in a mental breakdown, and the death of a mate will result in a psychotic rampage that will only end in death for the surviving vampire.”
“Oh my god.” Brandi collapsed back against Marko, and his arms immediately went around her, holding her tight against him. She turned her head to look into his eyes. “That’s what we have waiting for us?”
A/N: Sorry this is short. I couldn't think of any non-boring way to get all these things across, because most of them are fairly important to how things work out. But it's done, and hopefully I'll have another chapter that's longer (and naughtier!) than what we've had so far.
