Jack walked into the cabin, closing the door quietly behind him. The room was dark, save for one candle that gave off a small orb of light. Jack could see Sage’s face in the light. He was surprised to see it wasn’t a face of sorrow. It was more a face of coldness and uncaring. In her eyes there was only a slight rim of blue peeking out from around her pupil. Her face was pale and sickly. She was showing not even the slightest sense that she knew he was there. The oddest thing was she was rocking back and forth and seemed to be tucked into a ball as best a human could.
“Sage?” Jack said questioningly, he slinked around her in cat-like fashion to not disturb her. “Sage?” He whispered in a shaky voice. “Are you okay, love?” He came to rest, on bended knee, in front of her. He stared at her, hoping to see some sign that she was still in there. Her eyes stared back in his direction, but he could tell they were not looking at hiSageSage!” he called loudly, snapping his fingers in front of her face. Finally she stopped rocking and looked his way.
“What do ye want?” she asked him with out feeling.
“Listen, Sage, we got ta get ye in bed. Christian would want ye ta get on with killin’ yer father, wouldn’t he?” He told her, leaning forward to stroke her hair tenderly.
She nodded slowly and stood. “I guess ye be right.” She faked a smile.
There was a knock on her door, followed by Kain’s voice “Permission to enter, Cap’n?”
“Not right now, Kain. Please. Listen; tell the crew ta get some rest tonight. There’s goin’ be a lot of sailin’ ta do in the mornin’. They can finish cleanin’ tomorrow.” She told him through the door.
All she got in reply was a grunt and the sound of feet heading away from the door.
Sage looked at Jack and said, “I should be gettin’ some rest. Stay by my bed?” It wasn’t a command; it was a question. It sounded strange coming from her mouth, but Jack nodded. She headed for her bed and layed down. Jack looked around for something to set on and found the rum chest to be sturdy enough. Setting down on it, he turned to tell her good night, but found that she was already fast asleep.
He smiled and leaned down to kiss her forehead and then, replaced his lips with his hand. He rubbed his thumb softly over her forehead, not wanting to wake her from her slumber.
Two hours later, Jack got up to go get some fresh air, taking a bottle of rum from the chest first. Opening the door to the cabin, he stepped out into the pale moonlight. He opened the rum bottle and took a healthy swig. ‘It’s been a long w.’ J.’ Jack thought happily to himself. ‘Thank whatever God there be for rum.’ He stepped farther out onto the deck and sat down on a barrel.
He had thought he’d been hearing things, but he was sure he heard a noise coming from the shadows. It was if someone was sharpening a blade or something. “Who’s there?” Jack said out loud to the night.
“It’s just me Jack. No need for alarm of any sort.” Jack recognized this voice to belong to Kain.
“Oh,” Jack said, “Kain. It’s just you.” He laughed at the thought of him actually being scared.
“And just what be that supposed ta mean? Just me, is it now?” Kain’s voice came from Jack’s left in a low, menacing growl.
“Aye?” Jack said, not sure of how to answer the question.
“Just me? Do ye think I’m could not pose a threat to ye? You, the all-great and mighty ex-captain of The Black Pearl, Is that why it be just me?” Kain’s voice was otherworldly, as if something took hold of his soul and gave it a great anger, “Don’t ye think for a minutes time that I couldn’t gut ye like a fish.
“What be ye talking about, Kain? Are ngryngry with me in someway?” Jack asked the voice, shakily.
“Well, yes, where have ye been while I was talkin’?” Kain’s voice seemed to be coming from all around him now, “I don’t know what she sees in ye. I really don’t.”
Jack looked around the deck, looking for some sign of where the voice was coming from “Ah.” Jack said, no longer shaken by the conversation, “I see what this is. Ye have your eye on the girl. I knew that. I’ve seen ye have yer filthy eyes on her ever since the first day I set foot on this here ship, mate. Now, the part I couldn’t grasp is just why you two aren’t with each other. You’re not a eunuch, are you? That would be a pity.” Jack laughed.
Suddenly, Jack felt it behind him; it was like a quick rush of air. He dropped his bottle of rum, letting it smash onto the deck and turned around swiftly to come face to face with Kain “Nice trick ye got there, mate. Ye must show me how ye do it sometime.”
“If it is up ta me, ye won’t see tomorrow, mate.” Kain’s voice growled angrily. It was if he were a wolf of some sort, the way he talked, the way he moved. His eyes shone yellow in the moonlighe loe looked possessed or crazed. He pulled a sword out of his belt, the tip glintinll sll silver.
Jack’s face twisted in confusion and disgust. “You really need ta get that checked.” He said, gesturing to Kain’s face. Jack remembered that he had his effects on and he too pulled out his sword. “I really don’t think we should be doin’ this. If I kill you, Sage’d be awfully mad.”
Kain made a leap for Jack, lunging at him with his blade, his canine teeth bared. Sparks flew through the air as steel met steel. Jack moved his blade and swiped at Kain’s stomach which he barely missed as Kain jumped away. “She would get over it though.” Jack told him.
A great roar erupted from Kain’s throat as he made aim at Jack’s leg. He jumped out of the way causing Kain’s blade to sear only Jack’s pants. “These are me only pants, you great blighter.” Jack said staring down at the rip in his pants.
Jack swiped his sword near Kain’s face nearly missing, but was quick enough to cut his lip slightly. Kain wiped blood from his mouth with his free hand and glared at . “B. “Bastard!” he yelled.
“No need to talk about me mother, boy.” Jack said laughing.
Kain brought his free arm up and balled his fist, punching Jack square in the nose. It wasn’t hard enough to break it, but it was enough to start Jack’s nose bleeding.
“You’ll pay for that, Bucko.” Jack growled, wiping his sword through the air.
All over the deck they fought, steel-to-steel, sword-to-sword. Neither one breaking the others skin until finally Kain got the upper and knocked Jack’s sword out of his hand. He backed Jack into a wall, his sword to his throat. Kain hunkered down his teeth bared, eyes still glowing wildly. “I am the better man. Do ye hear me? Ye’d do good to remember that. I had you dead, right here and I’m going ta walk away and let you live.” Kain slowly let the pressure up off his blade and stepped back. He lowered his sword and walked away toward the cabin.
“I know ye love her, mate.” Jack said, before letting Kain leave.
“Aye.” Kain said turning his head, “What of it?”
Jack smiled and told him “I just want ye to know. I don’t care.”
With that Kain entered the cabin to get some sleep.
Not long after, Jack followed and made his way to his hammock. ‘I deserve a good rest’ Jack thought to himself, ‘A good, long rest’
