CHAPTER 7

‘I’ll show him Trouble,’ she said smiling to herself.

Down in the galley, Treasure looked over things thinking it was pretty much just another kitchen of sorts.

“What should I do,” she asked Gibbs.

Gibbs looked at her and smiled just a little bit and nodded his head over to the young man busy cutting potatoes.

“This here be Cooper. He’ll be showing ye what needs to be done,” Gibbs said as he turned to leave. Cooper looked up and nodded to Treasure.

It was rather hot down in the galley what with the door closed and the heat from the stove. Treasure pulled a hair tie from her pocket and tied her long hair back in a neat little bunch. She walked over to Cooper as she continued to look around the galley.

Cooper looked up at her as she neared him. He was a young man, probably in his early twenty’s. He had blond hair that hung down in his brilliant blue eyes.

“Ye ‘er worked in a galley ‘efore,” he asked Treasure with a crooked little smile.

Treasure nodded.

“Yes, I was the cook on our ship, BEFORE we were attacked,” Treasure said making sure Cooper knew she was not pleased with being on the Black Pearl.

“Aye, well, ye can be helping me with the cooking then. I be making a great soup for dinner. It has pork and lots of vegetables. Ye can finish the vegetables whilst I git started on making some bread to go with it.”

Treasure nodded taking the knife from Cooper. She glanced over to the stove and saw the huge black pot bubbling with the soup.

“It smells wonderful,” Treasure commented as she started to cut potatoes.

After peeling and cutting for over an hour, Treasure’s fingers began to get stiff and sore from the pressure of the knife. She picked up the pot of potatoes she had finished and carried them over to the stove.

Cooper watched as she poured them into the hot liquid. Treasure picked up a long wooden spoon and stirred the pot inhaling deeply the delicious aroma.

“What else needs to go in here,” she asked still stirring. Cooper looked up from his bread dough and smiled.

“I will be needen to add some flour to the soup ta make it a bit thicker,” he replied. Carrying a large bowl of flour, he walked over to Treasure. Just as he was going to dump it in the soup, Treasure stopped him.

“Wait, what are you doing,” she screeched. “That’s going to make the soup all lumpy pouring flour into it like that.”

“That’s the way I always be doing it and the men have ‘ner complained yet,” Cooper said.

Treasure rolled her eyes at the young man.

“Well, let me show you a little trick to keep the lumps out,” Treasure offered taking the flour from him.

She walked back to the table with the bowl of flour and set it down. Looking around she spied what she needed. Treasure grabbed a bucket of fresh water and poured some into the bowl of flour. Using her hand, she began smoothing the flour and liquid together breaking any lumps up with her fingers. Cooper watched her every move carefully.

When she had the flour water mixture nice and smooth she carried the bowl back to the pot of bubbling soap. As she poured her mixture in, the boiling slowed and stopped. Using the wooded spoon she began to stir again. Cooper made no comment as she stirred the pot. As the soup began to start boiling again, it took on a pleasant creamy thickness, free of lumps.

Treasure looked at Cooper and smiled proudly.

“My father taught me to cook when I was a little girl. This was one of his tricks.”

Cooper nodded his approval as he took the utensil from her. Dipping the spoon in the soup, he took a small taste and again nodded his approval.

“That werks good. You be takin me job soon if ye keep this up,” Cooper smiled taking another taste.

“Soon as the bread be done, we can have the crew ready to be fed,” Cooper told her. “It be a good idea now if ye would fix a big bowl of this and git it ready to take to the Captn’s quarters for his dinner.”

Treasure nodded and picked up the biggest bowl she could find. Holding it up to Cooper, he nodded in approval. Treasure filled the bowl with the soup just as Cooper brought over the freshly baked bread. She picked up a small loaf and placed it on the tray along with the bowl of soup.

“I’ll take this to the Captain’s Cabin, if that’s alright,” Treasure asked.

“Aye,” Cooper nodded as he spooned himself a bowl full of soup too. “Ye best be gittin’ yerself some whilst ye can, cause when the men taste this, it’ll be gone in no time.”

Treasure fixed a small bowl for herself and placed it along with a couple of pieces of bread, behind a stack of pots next to the stove.

“I’ll be back shortly,” she said picking up the Captain’s food tray. Treasure walked slowly to the Captain’s cabin so as not to spill one drop. She didn’t really think about it, but she was excited to have Jack taste the soup. She wanted him to know she could do something, something good and was not a troublemaker.

Carefully balancing the tray with one hand, Treasure softly knocked on the door to Jack’s cabin.

“IN,” came the reply through the closed door.

Treasure slowly opened the door and stepped inside. She turned slowly and pushed the door shut with her foot. When she turned back around Captain Jack Sparrow was standing directly in front of her.

“Mmmm, what have we here, luv,” Jack asked looking down at the tray and taking a deep breath. Smiling broadly he looked back up into Treasure’s eyes.

Trying to smile back as she stared into those chocolate brown eyes, Treasure mumbled, “I brought you some dinner. It’s some pork soup that Cooper and I made. It’s really good too.” Treasure felt flustered and knew she was sounding like a little kid.

Jack smiled breaking eye contact with her and took the tray from her and placed it on the desk.

“I really hope you like it,” Treasure said as Jack sat down to eat his meal.

Jack stopped before taking the first bite and looked at Treasure. She was standing there waiting for him to take a taste. He eyed her wondering why all of a sudden she was being so nice. Last time they had spoken, she had yelled at him and said something about showing him how much trouble she could be.

“Aren’t you having any, luv,” Jack asked. Suspicion was his nature and he was beginning to wonder if she had put something in the soup since she was so excited to see him eat it.

Treasure shook her head, “I have some taken out for me down in the galley. This is all for you,” she smiled.

“Nonsense, luv,” Jack said, “This is too much for me to eat all by me onesies. Come sit and share this with me.”

Treasure walked slowly over to the desk and sat down in the chair opposite Jack. Jack picked up the bread and broke it in half. He dipped it in the soup and held it out to Treasure. Treasure took the bread, never taking her eyes off Jack. He watched as she put the soaked bread in her mouth and took a bite. Treasure smiled and took another bite of the bread before dipping it once again in the soap.

Jack smiled and dipped his own bread in the soup and took a big bite tasting the delicious soup, all the while watching Treasure.

“This is good,” Jack said with his mouth full, “did you make this”?

Treasure smiled a triumphant smile. “I helped with it”, she said, then added, “You see, I CAN do something around here, besides cause trouble.”

Jack caught the sarcastic remark and smiled, an evil gleam in his eye.

“So it seems, luv. So it seems, but tell me, what do you have in mind for desert?”
