Chapter 7: A Rough Start
Chapter 7 : A Rough Start
When Jareth left his brothers on their own, he walked down the corridor that led back to the throne room. From there, he climbed the spiral staircase at the left of the corridor to get to Sarah’s room. He chose that room specifically for her. At that height, she had all the privacy she could want and she was safe from any danger. Although many Fae were good, there always was a constant threat from those who were racist against humans. The plus side was that the tower was easy access for a snowy white owl.
He opened the door and walked into her room with total disregard of its occupant. With the noise of the creaking door, Sarah awoke from her six hour slumber.
“Where…” she started to ask until she saw Jareth “…Oh that’s true…” she said standing up to face her nemesis so that she was less intimidated by his height. “Are they back yet?” she posed.
“No and only two hours remain.” He said indifferently. “And then you will all be mine…” he smugly added.
“I want to see them!” she demanded, finding more strength than she had before because of her newly rested body.
“You always forget who you are speaking to. Tst tst tst.” Jareth antagonized.
“Goblin King, I wish to see my friends…” she said in the nicest tone she could manage. She added no louder than a minor whisper, to sooth her own anger “…right now.”
“I’ll disregard your ‘right now’ for now but I will expect you to be more respectful when you are under my command.” Sarah never realized what amazing hearing he had but it didn’t completely surprise her. Without another word, two crystals came, one from the left, the other from the right, to place themselves before Sarah’s eyes. In one appeared Keaira and the other showed Kerri. Keaira was seen running in a panic and Kerri was hanging from a branch above the Bog of Eternal Stench. Sarah, in a panic, backed up on to the bed focusing on nothing but the crystals.
“Seems like the extra outfits will come in handy, does it not? So how do you feel about manual labor?” he kept antagonizing. At these words, Sarah stood up, on the defensive once again. As she stirred the crystals floated to the night table to become completely motionless.
“I’m not staying here…accept it and I’m sorry to burst your arrogant little bubble but I won’t be doing chores for you or live within proximity of you. I am not your slave. I never was and I never will be. My friends will be back shortly and we will be whisked from your palace faster than we came. You will see that yet again humans will defeat your labyrinth and there is nothing you can do about it. Just a suggestion, maybe when we leave you will create a much better challenge for your opponents because it is way too easy to get through your only defenses. So you can imagine all you want how great it would be to have me be at your beck and call but that’s all it will be, a mere thought. Remember, you have no control over me!” She had tried to stab him with her words and her enflamed gaze.
His mind began to race with every syllable she pronounced. Contradicting thoughts flowed through his brain. She was so enticing when she flared up with rage yet everything she said made him want to hurt her in any way possible. He stood there, silent for what seemed to be an eternity, his fists curled into tight balls and his lips pursed as if sealed from letting a word escape. He knew that she was not his to use yet and that he could soon exact his revenge on her which is why he fought so hard to not let his anger show. Sarah saw the conflict on his face, no matter how hard he tried to hide it. She was thoroughly enjoying this…it was her turn for once.
“Suit yourself, live in your little delusions. Just be prepared to have your hopes dashed. Just a slight warning, living here will not be a piece of cake so you might want to get use to the idea while you still have time.” Jareth warned, his expression going from reeling anger to his usual arrogant smile. On this note, he made his exit without a look back at his prisoner. He didn’t see her face flare up to a deep red. But Sarah wasn’t sure if she was pissed or if she felt like breaking down into tears. She hadn’t had to be a strong and witty opponent for approximately four years now. She wasn’t used to the confrontation anymore but what she did know was that if she was going to have to remain there she had no choice but to adopt the attitude and strength she had all those years ago.
She stared out the window of her prison cell for the next while, contemplating the scenery, thinking about everything and nothing and trying to regain her usual composure. After a period of time, she heard short stepped shuffling down the corridor. Sarah looked towards the door and was suddenly aware of a small rectangular slot attached to it. Through it came a short goblin carrying a tray much bigger than she. She was full of fur except for a filthy rag which she wore as a toga. Having had no entertainment for many hours, Sarah went to the bed and sat there, gaping at the goblin. The only thought that crossed her mind was how much the goblin looked like a moving piece of carpet. She began to laugh for the first time since her night on the town with the girls.
“What are you laughing at, Girlie?” squeaked the little creature. She walked up to the bed, began climbing a mini step ladder and tossed the tray of food before Sarah. The goblin then left through the same tiny door which she had entered, leaving Sarah on her own once again. Hunger slowly crept up on her so she quickly retrieved the crystals placed on the corner of her bedside table. At the slightest touch, they animated themselves with their respective live videos of the sisters. She started to eat the dinner that was brought to her while the crystals floated in front of her eyes, showing the trials and tribulations of the brave girls.
During this time, Jareth was doing much of the same thing. He was trying to regain his wits. His mind kept telling him two different things let alone the fact that he was fuming. He couldn’t help but wonder if having brought her back here was a bad idea. On the other hand, he knew that this was exactly what she wanted him to think and there was no way she was going to have the satisfaction of intimidating him. No one intimidates the Goblin King. He is the ruler, the mighty. He instigates fear in others and not the other way around. He repeated these sentences over and over in his head and soon became his level-headed, arrogant self again. For the remaining hour and a half, he busied himself with watching his mindless goblins entertain themselves in the throne room. Man, they were filthy creatures!
