River Rapids

Book 2

Chapter 8

Gentle glints of light sprinkled in through the window. She opened her eyes to the canopy of green foliage framing the outside of the window, and the dance of the sunlight across her face and body. Slowly she looked around, only to find that M’Pa was not at his usual post, his pilot seat. Knowing he wouldn’t want her wandering around the cabin, she used her foot, to push off from the wall, rotating her small resting bowl to get a better look around the cabin. He’d said that if he was in the lav, he would close the door to the back quarters, and would return shortly. But the door was open. She touched her toes to the back of the pilot’s panel and turned the bowl back around to the sunlit greenery outside. As the bowl turned more to face her forward, she noticed an elegant waterfall slicing down a small cliff, to a huge basin in front of the ship, and M’Pa, oddly poised on a rock in the middle of the basin. She watched him intently, as he’d not noticed her just yet.

The rock was about five feet across, and rose about two fee off the water surface. M’Pa was crouched on the top, his spear extended, and remained as still as a statue, his gaze never once leaving the water. The gentle breeze, evident in the movement of the bows around her, seemed not to even sway the male’s recovered dreads, as the hung about his shoulders.

Suddenly, like a lightning bolt from the heavens, M’Pa’s spear shot from his hand, and into the water. Quickly he rose to his feet, pulling his spear out of the water, with a huge fish impaled on the end. She couldn’t hear him, but she knew, he was roaring in triumph, daring the predatory beasts around him to do what he’d just done. She smiled broadly at his stance, his shaking head as he roared, but gasped slightly, when she realized, he was staring at her. She smiled even more, as he slapped his hand to his chest, and waving the same hand towards her. She nodded.

A sudden pain across her lower abdomen nearly doubled her over. Had he been in the ship, he would have heard her high pitched scream. A shadow blazed across the window, and the sound of the door opening and closing, with hurried footsteps heading for her, she could hear water dripping on the floor. “El?” M’Pa cried, quickly scanning her belly, and resting his hand over her head. “Easy El,” he soothed, rubbing her lower stomach. “We can be back at the ship in under an hour if I have to.”

“No,” she gasped, the pain subsiding. “I don’t think its labor, I think one of them shifted.” She could smell his skin, crisp and clean, he had to have dove into the water to get to the shore when he saw her double over. Boy he could move fast when he wanted too, that was only a few seconds ago!

M’Pa looked again, as she began to uncurl, gently pressing to the area where he could see one of the babies moving inside, massaging the pain away. “Better?” he asked. She nodded. He purred as she began to nuzzle into his hand at her head. “You feel better? You’ve slept for quite some time.”

“I didn’t realize how tired I was. M’Pa?”

“Yes?”

“Thank you,” she kissed the heal of his hand, “for letting me watch you. For bringing me here, to the water fall, it’s all so beautiful.”

“You like this place?” he asked genuinely curious.

“Yes. I love the water, and waterfalls are often very beautiful. The power in the beauty of them is really incredible.”

“I’m glad you like it. This is my favorite personal hunting spot. The food here is large and plentiful.”

“And fish is often very good for you,” she commented sleepily.

“Are you alright El? You only just woke up, and already you wish to sleep.”

“I just find it hard to breathe. My chest hurts.” Gently he probed her chest, testing gently her ribs down her sides, and across beneath her breasts. Upon feeling a couple of small lumps he stopped, scanned with his mask, then began to laugh. “What’s so funny?”

“I now understand what my mother meant, when she was carrying my sister,” he chuckled. “And now the things she did make sense.”

“What?”

“One of our little ones, has its little feet stuck between your ribs. My sister did the same to my mother in later stages of her pregnancy.”

“Well how do we get him to move?”

“Him?”

“M’PA!”

“Sorry. My mother used to stretch. I can help you if you let me.”

“Anything! I’ve been like this for days.”

“Why didn’t you say anything”

“I don’t know!” she cried, as M’Pa gently lifted her shoulders to his chest.

“Easy My’El. Let me help you. Here, give me your arm,” he raised her right arm up over her head, allowing her to thread her hand through his dreads. “Ok, now take a deep gentle breath.” She did, but felt nothing different. M’Pa kept his scanning eyes trained on the position of the baby inside her body. “Do it again. Again…once more…” she felt a sudden lessoning in pressure around her ribs, and took several breaths at a time. “There. The little one has moved. Feel better?”

“Yes, much. Thank you, M’Pa, you’ve been so wonderful all this time.” He purred deeply into her neck, feeling her fingers gently stroke his dreads. “Your dreads have grown back so nicely.”

“Thank you. With gentle massaging like yours, to encourage regrowth, they’ll be longer than the Grand Elder’s in no time.” She giggled, as his tongue gently lapped at her ear lobe, before finally pulling away. “I’ll clean the fish, and we’ll have some food. Then I will take you to see the largest waterfalls your world has.”

“No. I don’t think I’d like to.”

“What? Why not?”

“I’ve had enough. I don’t want to travel anymore. Can we join up with Ver’On? I’d really like to see you two together again. Please?”

“Of course,” he said, as he watched her move the pillows around her, and pull the blanket tighter around her shoulders.

“El?”

“I’m just tired. I don’t want to see any more of this world. I want to be with you and Ver’On. I want you to hold me, purr to our babies…”

“Ok El,” he sighed, realizing what was happening. “I will send word to Ver’On that we will be joining him soon. Now,” he turned the resting bowl back to the view out the window, “you rest, enjoy the view. I will fix us some food. Then we’ll be on our way.”

“Thank you M’Pa,” she smiled, and reached for him. He leaned over and hugged her. Deftly she removed the data pad from his armor plating, quickly scanning the text written there.

They were suggestions of how to care for her while on their trip. Ideas for comforting, pain relieving without medications, positions for sleep, and so on. When M’Pa stood she smiled, and handed him back the data pad. “It kept sticking in my leg,”

she lied, but he took the pad back without fuss. “Thank Sa’ton for his information for me ok? You’re doing great with it.”

“I will. Now, enjoy. I’ll be right back.” On his walk back towards the rear rooms, he picked up his spear with the fish still impaled on the end, and went into the converted sleeping chambers. True to his word, he had not slept on this journey, remaining diligent over El to be sure she didn’t try to over exert herself.

Laying his kill on the counter, he took out the data pad, and scrolled down to the next screen. He’d read the pad over many times, but always wanted to read over the text once more, as new situations arose. What he witnessed with El, he’d read about, and it was there in front of him. He had to get El back to the ship, and soon. But her stress level had to remain low. If meeting up with Ver’On was going to do that, than that’s what he would do.

He laid the fish in the purification vat, using it to make sure the kill had no impurities that would harm El or their babies, and went over to the communications console. Being this close to Ver’On’s ship, he didn’t have to go through the main clan ship to reach him. He opened a frequency to Ver’On. “This is M’Pa, Calling Elder Ver’On. Urgent…”

Chonie watched the island of her home come into view. Several times on their journey they flew parallel to some of the passenger airliners heading to the tropical island, only to pass them quickly. In total it would take normal flights six hours plus to get to the island from California, but with the Yautja craft, it only took two hours. And that was taking it easy.

She guided the young pilot to a clearing near where her hotel was. There, safe from prying eyes, and pedestrians, the ship settled into the tree lined grass patch, still fully cloaked, and lowered the passenger ramp to let the humans, Elder Ver’On and Tan’ock off the ship. Ver’On assured them not to worry about their luggage, he would make sure Chonie’s was sent to her home, once they knew where she lived.

Once outside, Chonie quickly sought through her purse, and pulled out her cell phone. “I’ll call for a cab to come and get us. There’s a beach just on the other side of those trees, very popular for tourists, even those that don’t drive.” The humans handed their masks and tanks back to the youngblood, and readied for a short walk to the road side.

“ELDER!!” called the other youngblood, Ver’On looked back to the ship. “M’Pa is hailing. It’s Urgent.” Tan’ock fell into stride next to Ver’On, leaving the group with the young blood to be watched over.

Ver’On quickly activated their system, and M’Pa’s face floated in the holograph in front of him. “M’Pa, what’s the situation?” Ver’On asked urgently.

El has had enough of viewing her world. She wishes to join up with you.

“I’ll have one of the young bloods send you our co-ordinates. We’ve moved to another land mass.”

Understood. But Ver’On, you must know, she’s begun her nesting behavior. The second offspring has shifted, but the third is still not in proper birthing position. There isn’t much time left.

“What is her demeanor?”

Calm, for the most part. She rests repeatedly, and long. She tires easily. I’ve kept her off her feet as much as possible, and she’s had no ambition to rise to her feet in the last 36 Ooman hours.

Ver’On took in all the information M’Pa had said. If their suspicions were correct, she would give birth in ten maybe fifteen days. “Be gentle with her, go slow. Sudden G-force changes could cause her discomfort.”

Understood.

“The new co-ordinates are being sent now,” he glanced to the youngblood, and he nodded back.

Co-ordinates received. We’ll be having a light meal, then we’ll be on our way. Ver’On, are there any water falls where you are now?

“Why?”

She likes them, they help her relax.

“Stand by.” Quickly he scanned the area, looking over the land structure around them, even on the other islands. Finding a huge cliff with water cascading over the side, he marked the co-ordinates and sent it over to M’Pa. “A large one not far from us.”

“Excellent. I’ll fly her to it before meeting up with you.

“I will be at the foot of it. Just let me know when you get here.”

Understood. M’Pa out.

Ver’On purred all the way out of the ship, not even giving the worried Tan’ock a second glance. When he stepped into the sun outside he puffed his chest and chattered loudly over the area, finally resting his sight on the two male Oomans that were important to his mate. Briskly he went to them, shaking each of their shoulders in turn, then activated his cloak and headed off to the trees to scout around.

Ralph looked back and forth to his friend, the woman and the other alien, who seemed very worried. “What was that all about?” he asked.

Tan’ock tapped his tusks together repeatedly beneath his mask, before speaking. “El is coming. M’Pa is bringing her later today, perhaps arriving tomorrow.”

“Is she alright to travel?”

“She seems to be. Though now she’s moved to her final stages before birth. She’s close.”

“She won’t give birth here will she?”

“We’re hoping not. We are not equipped. Not only that, she needs special care while in labor. We can not provide that kind of care here. We MUST get her back to the clan ship.”

“You seem…upset about this?” Ro stated, noting how agitated the warrior seemed to be.

Tan’ock regarded the slight Ooman, but nodded. “I had an Ooman mate before. It was very tricky for her in her later stages. She was very delicate, so much so, we’d lost one of our offspring before its proper birthing time. I think it foolish to cart El all over this planet in her condition. Not only that, all males of our race are protective of pregnant females. By rights, El should be secluded in her quarters on the ship. Ver’On knows better.”

“Wait,” Ralph stated, “I’m confused. If Ver’On is her, ah…would you call him husband as well?”

“Ver’On is El’s mate,” Tan’ock stated, walking away and the two men fallowing him. “Is that the term you seek?”

“Yes, thank you. If Ver’On is her mate, and your people are very protective over her, who is traveling with her, and what are they to her and Ver’On?”

“M’Pa is traveling with her, and he is her mate as well.”

Ro just stared at the tall hunter. “What?” Ralph gasped. “I don’t think so! El would never betray someone she loved. I know things were touchy with them when Ver’On took her away that night, but I’d always hoped they would stay together. When Ver’On told me that she was pregnant, and he the father, I was over joyed that my hopes came true. Now you tell me she’s two timing him with another!? I’ll kill him!”

Tan’ock laughed, he laughed so hard, he had to stop at the tree line, and use a large palm tree trunk to balance himself before he could regain his composure. The two Ooman males just looked on in utter confusion. “THAT WAS FUNNY!” Tan’ock finally stated. “You?! Ooman you can hardly get excited over a good meal without having chest pains. But I’m sure that Ver’On would be honored that you would defend him, and El that way.

“Do not concern yourself. M’Pa was selected, and their joining was mutual, for all three of them. El would not wish to part with Ver’On or M’Pa, she loves them both, as they love her…” his eyes became distant as he remembered his earlier plans of trying to sway El’s heart. But it was Chonie that he would use those plans on now. He purred as he saw her step out from the trees and into the sunlight of the road side. Her brown skin glowed in the light of the high sun, and her long black hair shone in bright black sheets of light, as she turned to the trees to see where they were. “Ver’On trusts M’Pa, and El trusts them both. She is safe, though her travels right now are outrageously foolish.” He purred deeply to Chonie, as they joined her. “If you’ll excuse me, I have plans to make, a course to set back to the ship, and a communication to a huntmaster to send.”

“Of course. Is there anything that we need to be aware of?” Ro asked.

“Yes. Keep yourselves close, and don’t lose those translators. Now that the matrix is working properly, it would be helpful to talk to you in a normal conversation. Also, the youngbloods will be doing some exploring, don’t go getting in their way. They are young, and hot headed, they may become frustrated and angered by you easily. I would hate to have to…” he regarded Ralph once more, “…scrape up what’s left of one of them, should you tangle with them. Give Ver’On a day or two to kick their asses, before you consider crossing them.”

“Good to know.”

With a chuckle beneath his breath, Tan’ock headed back to the ship. Not only would he know what Chonie was saying in his presence with the translator, he’d added a little something to her translator, that would send her words back to him from a greater distance, as well as allow him to track her. As long as she didn’t take the translator off, he would be able to find her no matter where she went on the planet.

Chonie huffed at Tan’ock’s back, outwardly glad that he was leaving, but inwardly…that was another matter. Her stomach was twisting, it seemed, in all directions, part of her wanted to go with him, another part of her wanted to leave him, and another part…well, she wasn’t ready to admit that part existed yet.

She dialed a number on her phone, and asked for a cab to be sent to the beach to pick them up. Ro made sure he had Ralph’s medicine secure in his pockets, two sprayers this time not just one, then went and joined is old friend in sitting in the sad, while they waited for a cab. “You alright my friend?” Ro asked.

“Hu? Oh yes, I’m fine. A bit perplexed perhaps, but fine.”

“Perplexed about what?”

“El, and why she would take on two men at the same time?”

“That is for her to answer. You can ask her when she arrives.”

“I’ve a feeling we won’t be allowed to see her when she gets here.”

Chonie showed Ro and Ralph where things were in her apartment, considering the size of the building, her apartment was very small. The main living space was only seventeen feet by thirty feet, and shared it with the dinning room, kitchen and entry way. The bedroom was only ten by ten, and the bathroom was about standard for an apartment her size; you sneeze and you take out the mirror with the force of the blow. Her linen closet was literally a hole in the wall, made by her pulling off the jiprock and setting in some cross boards for shelves. If the land lord found out, she’d be out several hundred dollars for her damage deposit.

She checked the fridge, Heeno had obviously been by to have a bite to eat, there was nothing left in the fridge, but a half liter of spoiled milk, a spilled can of beer, a mildew sandwich, and a shriveled up apple. She shook her head. “I’ll have to buy some groceries,” she said, sliding everything into the garbage can, and checking the freezer. The only thing there, was a block of ice, which used to be the ice tray, otherwise empty. She checked her cupboards, to find her cereals still there. Then again Heeno didn’t like the healthy food that she kept in the cupboards, so her Special K, and All Bran cereals were safe.

She shook her head again, and started making a list.

“Chonie, I have an idea,” Ro began. “I am going to be leaving, I have all this money. Why don’t we go and stay at one of the finest hotels on the island. My treat.”

“Grandfather, I hate the idea of you leaving. I want you here!”

Ro patted her shoulder. “Your grandmother died of cancer, so did your great grandmother, and great grandfather. It is a long history of it in our family. I want to do something so monumentus for me, before I die. Going with Ver’On and Ralph on a tour around the galaxy is the best thing I can think of. I may not have cancer now, but in time, I may. I wish to do this, while I’m still in control of all my faculties. Do you understand?”

“So you’ll leave me, that’s it?”

“That, my dear, is entirely up to you.” Perplexed by his statement, Chonie just watched her grandfather walk away, picking up a phonebook as he went, and the cordless from the wall.

Ver’On watched the strange vehicle move off down the coast, the three Oomans secure in the seats. The two youngbloods, stood with him, watching the vehicle go, and as it disappeared from view, Ver’On turned to the two young hunters. “You will make sure nothing happens to them,” he said sternly. “They are not to be harmed in ANY way. The female is to be protected. Tan’ock has plans for her. You are not authorized to hunt at this time, unless it is one who wishes to harm those three. Is that understood?”

“May we take note of which Oomans we wish to hunt, for the next hunt we attand?” one asked.

“You may.”

“Then we agree,” the second said after a time, as the first nodded to him.

Ver’On nodded, and headed back to the ship. When he entered, he found Tan’ock heading down the hall from the command center. “The hunt master is not pleased,” he stated. “They were preparing to leave tomorrow.”

“He should have notified us sooner.”

“I told him that. He said he would take it up with you once we return to pick him up.”

“That may be sooner than he thinks. I have to go to a water fall area. El will be arriving there soon. Once I’m there, you head back to the city, find the young bloods, they will be watching over the Oomans. Take their place, and send them for the huntmaster. When they return…”

“Wait, wait…I’ve a better idea. I will take you to where you will meet El, by the time she is settled, I can return for Chonie, and the others. We will all then go to the mainland and gather the hunting party, and leave this rock. I wish to see the stars again, I wish to hear Chonie scream in the vastness of space, as I mate her.”

Ver’On looked over the hunter, as his eyes seemed to take a mischievous smile. “Are you alright?”

Tan’ock chuckled, with a seductive purr underlying his laugh. “Never better,” he replied, and continued to purr, as he made his way back to the command center.

Ver’On shook his head. ‘He’s heading for a must spell, I can tell. I best keep El safe, and warn Chonie, before he hurts her.’ He heard the door close, and felt the ship take to the air once more. The waterfall co-ordinates were still fresh in the computer, and Tan’ock was with him when he called them up anyway. So there was no doubt that Tan’ock knew where he was going. Ver’On headed to his quarters. He had to make room for the resting bowl that M’Pa had built before they left. If El truly was heading for her nesting stage, she would not wish to leave the resting bowl she was in, for any length of time. He would make sure the rest of the room was a drab as possible, so that she would keep her liking to it, rather than over stress herself in shifting around all the time.

She opened her eyes again, to see the bright light of the sun shining across the window. Only this time, the view of the waterfall and basin was not what greeted her. Instead, El came face to face with a shear rock wall, with water gently cascading down the surface. It wasn’t just one small reverlet either, this whole cliff, some 600 feet high or more, for they were still descending, was shedding water from dozens of small holes that poked into the side of the cliff. Some streams were tiny trickles, while others were rushed torrents, joining up with other streams, as the water descended the vegetation covered cliff.

M’Pa heard the gentle gasp of awe from his mate. He pressed in the last of the commands, and set the controls. The ship would gently descend the rock wall, and land easily on the ground, not far from where he detected Ver’On. He would make sure she had a total view. He left his station and knelt at her side, gently stroking her hair. “Ver’On sent me the co-ordinates,” he said softly, as though any louder speech would break the magic of the scene before them. “I have to admit, it is beautiful.”

“Where are we?” she asked quietly, not taking her eyes from the wall.

“A land mass, almost in the middle of the planets largest body of water.”

“Hawaii! Oh my god, that’s The Wall of Tears!”

“Is that what they call it?”

“Yeah, the water coming down makes it look like tears. I never thought I’d ever see it. Oh god it’s beautiful.”

“Well, not as beautiful as what you are about to see.” And he directed her gaze to the right, as the ship gently touched the ground. Slowly Ver’On stepped up to the glass, his body alive with the blue light of his fading cloak. He puffed his chest, and thrust his chin to her, asking with the gesture if she was alright.

She was about to nod yes, when the same pain as before gripped her side. M’Pa held her shoulders as she tried not to double over and crush her young, rubbing firmly against the pain. Ver’On had dashed to the door, entered his code and rushed to her side when the door opened. “EL!”

“The last baby is trying to turn,” M’Pa explained. “There’s just not much room left.”

Together they massaged the area that Ver’On could see the baby inside pressing against, nearly sideways in position. They were trying to help it turn, but instead, the little one turned back, its head nestled between the feet of its two turned siblings. El managed to catch her breath, her cries of pain and frustration fading, against the gentle probing, and comforting purrs of her mates. At last, she was at rest, half dozing against Ver’On’s chest, as he leaned across her. Ver’On reached over and shook M’Pa’s shoulder in greeting, and the two began clicking softly back and forth, telling each of the adventures they’d had.

At last El woke again, a gentle kiss to Ver’On’s chest, right beneath the edge of his armor breast plate. Ver’On purred in greeting to her, and kissed her deeply. “I missed you too,” she sighed, when he released her lips. “Ver’On…I want to go home. After I visit the canyon, I want to go home. Will you take us home, please?”

Her near crying state nearly crushed his heart in his chest. He could see the tiredness in her eyes, could feel the weariness in her muscles. It was little wonder she didn’t want to rise from the resting bowl. Purring deeply as he tapped his mandibles across her brow, he replied, “Perhaps the Canyon is not such a good idea.”

“No. I want to go. Please,” she begged. “If only…to say good bye.”

‘Good Bye?’ he thought. ‘Good bye to what?'
