She spent the night dusting the shelves and doing some light organizing, trying to ignore the subtle pain in her chest.

“He really is a cruel thing isn’t he?” said an unfamiliar voice behind her.

Lexi looked over her shoulder, “Who’s there?”

A figure bowed out of the darkness. His hair was dark and long, braided down over his shoulder. He was shorter than the Goblin King, but just as well packaged. Something flicked around his legs as he looked up at Lexi. “My name is Laith, my lady. I am one of his majesty’s scribes. I too was a gift from the Seelie court.”

“The Seelie must not value an individual’s life much if they send people as gifts all the time. I put all of the blank paper stacks in that drawer over in the desk.” She gestured in the direction she meant. “Take what you need and go.”

“Now, there is no need to be equally as cruel as the king, my lady.” The fae pouted.

“I’m sorry, but I don’t have any trust for the fae at this point in time.” She looked down at him from the top of her ladder. “Is that a tail?”

The Fae blushed and the furred tail wagged softly, “It is why I was a gift, my lady. The Seelie court is the most beautiful thing in this world and any other. I am…imperfect.”

Lexi felt her heart soften. “Just because you have a tail?”

“No, because I am a shape-shifter, well, half shifter anyway.” He shrugged, “My mother is of the Seelie court while my father was an incubus.”

“So was mine….” Lexi looked at him cockeyed, “Who’s your daddy?”

“Bruen, he took over as main incubi when Dominic left the underground.”

“But I thought Dominic was Unseelie.” She turned and sat on the top step of the ladder.

“The cubi serve both courts as lovers and assassins. Dominic was the best, he was one of the most favored in either court, and at the time, neither court wanted your mother to succeed.” He sat on one of the leather chairs and looked up at her. “But he made a critical mistake in the life of an incubus. He fell in love. Lust is fine, but love, that changes everything. Once a cubi chooses a mate, one that will bear its children, the cubi is then worthless to the courts and is shunned. The product of a cubi coupling will be of many uses, however. They usually have much power and become some of the most successful assassins and lovers. However, they do have to be taught.”

Lexi’s eyes narrowed, getting his point instantly. "I have no interest in being taught like that.”

“Ah then what were you doing in his majesty’s bedchamber?” he smirked.

Lexi blushed furiously. “That was a mistake, one I don’t plan on making again.”

“But isn’t this your…” Laith counted on his slender fingers, “Third mistake?”

“Go away now. Get your paper, and get the hell out of here.” Lexi used what magic she had learned and three heavy books started to fly around her.

“Just telling you what awaits you. Usually it is your sponsor who trains you in the arts of the cubi, but other ways have been known to be used.” Laith chuckled and colleted the paper out of the drawer, “Do not be surprised if his majesty hands you over to someone else for training if he does not have time to do it himself.”

“Is the Seelie court just sending you people to piss me off?” she said through gritted teeth.

“On the contrary, I was hoping we could be friends.” Laith looked up at her innocently, his tail drooping.

“Oh, damn. Puppy-eyes.” She started replacing the books on the shelf. “Look, Laith, while I do not like my forced captivity in this castle, it…would be nice to have someone to talk to besides King Dork-a-lot.”

Laith snickered, “I bet you would not say that to his face.”

“Would if he pissed me off enough.” She shrugged, “He’s probably waiting for you now, so go deliver the papers and then come on back, we’ll talk if you want.”

His tail started wagging, “I would like that.”

“Cool. See you in a bit then.” Lexi smiled softly as Laith exited the library, maybe this wouldn’t be so bad after all.

Laith was humming as he walked down the hall to the King’s chamber. Oh wouldn’t his sister be proud of him! As Lithan’s twin it was his responsibility to make sure his sister was to be the only one in the king’s bed. And to make sure of that, he had to keep the girl out of it. As he was humming a pale arm shot out of the darkness in a corner and dragged Laith into it, clamping a slender hand over his mouth.

“I am in a lot of trouble because of you, idiot!” hissed his sister. “You should have gone to the girl sooner!” she released his mouth and shoved him into the stone wall. “Now his majesty will not bed me for a full three weeks!”

“I-I could not get there sooner!” he whimpered, “Every time I went to the library she was either not there or his majesty was with her! I could not very well seduce her when his magic overpowers mine!”

“Shhhh, shhh, brother.” Lithan cooed softly, stroking his jaw. “I know it is not your fault, but do not underestimate your own power. You are very powerful, the magi told papa that when you were born. Such a powerful boy, such a good boy, worry not, Sister is here.”

“Lithan what are we going to do? The King Oberon is expecting results from you bedding the Goblin King. If he finds out that Jareth is refusing you for three weeks, it could be very bad for us!” He clung to his sister’s midsection, kneeling at her feet. “I cannot live without you, Sister!”

“It is all right, Laith, I have a plan.” She smiled wickedly. “I want you to play on the cruel side of his majesty. Keep reminding that wretch that Jareth took her uncle away and would have kept him. Remind her that her mother beat him, and remind her that now she is in his clutches and that the only thing she can keep from him is herself. The King will become so frustrated; he will practically run back into my arms.” Lithan quietly clapped her hands together. “Oh it is positively delicious!”

“What of the ball that is to occur on the full moon?” Laith started shaking, “The Queen of Darkness will be there! She wants to see how well His Majesty is handling the girl.”

“Then we make sure she misbehaves; teach her everything she should not do to impress the queen. Then the wretch will be sent away.” She chuckled softly. “This is why I love you, dear brother. You think of the most wonderful ideas!” She hugged her brother tightly, "Go on back to his majesty, Laith, then come back to me. We will plan more.'

"But I already have a plan." he smiled, "I am to meet the girl after my business is done with the his majesty. She wishes to talk."

"Oh you are good, Laith." Lithan smirked, "Getting her to trust you like that. Our father would be very proud." She started down the hallway again her blonde hair swinging demurly behind her. "Very proud indeed."

So what do you think? I'd love to hear. I'd also like some ideas as to where to run with this if anyone is interested. I'm also sorry the chapters have gotten shorter but so has the time I am able to devote to this. Thank you for reading my story! ^.^
