Chapter 8: The Final Run

Chapter 8 : The Final Run

Keaira and Kerri remained in silence, with their animal company, as they walked slowly down the hill, towards the castle. Because the adrenaline rush they had acquired from the rescue had steadily worn down, they began to feel their feet fall out from under them. Noticing their human companions begin to lag behind, both the griffin and the wolf looked at each other as if agreeing with each other as to what they were going to do next. They placed themselves in front of the two tired young women, as a barricade, so that they would be obligated to stop. Despite the girls’ best effort, they had no choice but to temporarily end their march at least until they had the ability to move again. Besides, they checked a nearby clock which announced that an hour and a half remained and the castle was in sight so they decided to give in to their heroes’ wishes.

They sat down and started the relaxation of every muscle in their body. A soothing, numbing feeling began to creep up along their tired legs. After ten minutes of sitting on the ground, they had found the energy to start recounting everything that happened since they had been separated eight hours and forty-five minutes ago. Through out story time, their animal companions just laid down next to the girls, seeming soothed by the adventures the courageous women next to them endured.

Lost in the comfort all four felt and the stories of the adventures they had to pass through, they forgot all about the time limit. It was the ringing of the nearby clock that took them out of their reverie. Only half an hour remained and they were so close yet so far from their goal. In a panic and without a word, they jumped to their feet followed by their furry friends and began a sprint to the distant castle. No matter how much adrenaline was coursing through their veins, they still couldn’t keep up the pace for more than 5 minutes before their bodies felt like they were going to collapse. They continued their course at a jog that was barely faster than a walk but they still clung to the hope of defeating Jareth and getting away from that terrible land. Nevertheless, the more they ran, the further away the castle felt from them.

They descended a couple of minor hills and made their way across a deserted plain. If they had had time to take in their environment, this is what they would’ve seen and smelt. The plain was made of a grey kind of clay with short, dried up tress scattered about. The part that stood out from that entire place was its unforgettable stench. Although they had left the Bog of Eternal Stench behind them, the smell remained for miles. Another smell that came into play though was that of the dump not too far on the right. The combination would’ve been lethal if the company wasn’t too busy rushing to escape their soon to be undeniable fate.

After twenty-five minutes of running they finally arrived at the big metal doors. They found no obstacle but a few ruthless goblins on dragon-like lamas. These creatures were holding spears at the girls. The wolf and the griffin were not going to stand idly by as their friends were being threatened by these dumb beings. The wolf jumped for the three on the right, the closest ones to him; the griffin went and picked up the three from the left to simply toss them into some other place where they wouldn’t be able to bother their quest.

As soon as they entered the Goblin City, they realized they had entered into a smaller labyrinth of streets and houses that resembled huts. The streets were covered in cobblestone and the huts close knit. This provided the effect that everywhere they went; the scenery was practically the same which confused the friends. Although it was simple compared the labyrinth they had just exited, it still took a couple of minutes to figure it out. They finally arrived in front of a giant fountain with goblin’s doing their business in the water. Directly behind this statue were the long stairs leading into the castle, the ones they had been in search of for the last ten hours. Taking a deep breathe, smiles plastered to their faces, they prepared themselves to climb the stairs to success. They had barely raised their leg from the ground to continue their march before, out of nowhere, sparkles began to surround them. With that, they were transported away. In fear, the sisters closed their eyes until they were back on solid ground. Once they reopened them, they realized they were back in the throne room with Jareth facing them, as menacing as ever, and each other. Their animal companions were nowhere to be found. For a split second they were worried about what fate had succumbed to their heroes but those thoughts were pushed far out of their heads when they recognized the predicament they now found themselves in.

“Congratulations, you have failed my labyrinth. I am pleased to announce that you will be my new servants. As well, my brothers, Griffith and Gareth are in town for the time being so you will wait on them as well as I.” he announced to the disappointed girls.

“Come Keaira, Kerri, it’s alright. If we stick together we can survive this.” said a familiar, almost motherly voice from the corridor to their right. It was Sarah running down to meet her friends once she heard the clock chime for the tenth hour. When Sarah arrived in the room, all that could be seen was three girls giving hugs of thankfulness to see everyone alive and well. They were in tears and you could hear very faint apologies every few seconds.
