Prologue – Fool’s Wish

“Well, Cap’n, that last hit got the rest of the water supply. There’s enough left for one day’s ration, day and a half at the most. We’ll have to put to port and restock.” Gibbs stood patiently, waiting for his captain to tell him what he already knew.

“Then we’ll just have to find a ship, because the nearest port is nigh on a week’s sailin’. Don’t worry, mate. The Pearl will find something for us.” Jack looked confident. Gibbs knew he was daft when it came to his ship. “In the meantime, collect all the water from the casks on deck and the galley. We’ll ration it till we find some more.” Gibbs ran off to collect whatever water he could find. Jack fondled a spoke on the wheel as he spoke to his lady. He gazed at his compass and made a slight adjustment to the helm. “Pearl, if ye ever loved me, darlin’, find us some water.” The Black Pearl seemed to sigh as she cut through the night.

A light.

Jack blinked. /A ship?/

Another light joined the first.

Steering toward the lights, Jack could have sworn he was looking at a town.

“All hands, prepare to dock!” Jack’s voice rang throughout the Pearl, and the pirate crew poured out of the belly of the ship, first pausing to make sure that their Captain hadn’t gone completely mad, then hurrying to carry out their respective tasks to bring the Pearl safely into port.

As they tied up the ship and lowered the gangplanks, Jack still didn’t recognize the port. “Mr. Gibbs, you find the harbormaster and arrange for water and supplies. I’m going ashore to find out what our reception might be like.” He swished rather drunken-looking down the gangplank and up the dock, still operating on the rolling gait of his finely tuned sea legs.

Jack wandered up the main street, his eyes never stopping, looking for hints about what kind of town they were in. He saw a tavern and walked in. The place was rowdy, but not too much so. He walked up to the barkeep. “Rum.”

A mug was filled and handed to him. “Doce maravedi, senor.”

Jack put 14 Spanish coppers onto the bar. “Que pueblo es?”

“Se llama el Deseo del Tonto.”

“Fool’s Wish? Gracias.” He drank the rum in a single draught. It was sweet and delicious, better than any rum he’d ever had. He looked at the empty mug and sighed. He had to get back to the Pearl, but he’d definitely remember this tavern. He thanked the barman and walked out, heading back down toward the docks.

He hadn’t gotten very far when he noticed that he was going the wrong way. Shaking his head, he turned around to head back, when he came face to face with an odd looking woman. She was actually quite stunning, with black hair and eyes, and beautiful olive skin. But her eyes were wild, staring through him instead of at him. Jack smiled in a friendly manner, and tipped his hat to her. “Excuse me, love.”

The woman raised her hands, yelling at Jack in a strange language, her hands moving in odd patterns in front of him. He tried to get around her, but found that he couldn’t move. Rooted to the spot, he started to panic, feeling both his body and soul on fire. Jack was actually grateful when the blackness took him.
