‘God, I can’t believe I have so much shit to move!’ Kelly muttered to herself as she placed her laptop on top of her suitcase.

Although there was extra room in her SUV for more of her possessions, she chose not to take everything. Selecting only her clothes, books and her CD collection along with a the few things her father gave her and some personal necessities, she wanted to quickly be out of the apartment before he came home. She did not want to be in his orbit when the shit hit the fan.

Leaving was a decision long in the making and finally an opportunity presented itself. The first step was in making the decision to leave. That had been the hardest part. She found it was difficult in keeping it a secret from her family and friends, lest he find out and stop her.

‘I will never get into another relationship where paranoia and jealousy are part of his persona!’ she thought to herself as she took one last look to make sure she had everything. Placing the keys on the side table, she quickly took her leave.

A new job and a new life. She was looking forward to this. Kelly filled the tank and made a mental note to call her father as soon as she arrived at her destination. The drive alone would be about fifteen hours and that was if she drove straight through. It would get dark early and that would help quell any attempt by him to try to track her down. Darkness would be her cover and she would welcome it gladly.

At about the eighth hour, after a few stops for gas, snacks and a bathroom break, Kelly could feel the exhaustion creeping upon her. She found she could drive for miles while her mind wandered and then suddenly snap out of it realizing she was only half paying attention to the road ahead. Not that there was any traffic. Route 66 was long, winding and some stretches were completely desolate. She was grateful she had “borrowed” Cissy’s cell phone for the trip realizing keeping hers could mean trouble.

She filled her thoughts with memories from her childhood and her father. He had been inconsolable by his wife’s passing when Kelly was eight and her brother five. Kelly didn’t know what breast cancer was then, she just knew it took her mother away from her and made her into a shell of the person she used to be, draining her of her energy and dulling the bright smile a little at a time.

Kelly still is the image of her mother, with long strawberry blond hair and gray eyes. Her father always called her Pocahontas because of the braids she wore. She could have braided her hair herself, but she enjoyed when her mother did it. Kelly loved sitting on her mother’s lap while her hair was brushed and styled into ‘Indian’ braids.

She was teased as a child because she wore braces and was a ‘toothpick’. As a result of that, she grew up with a serious lack of self esteem. She always sensed this was the cause of her choosing the wrong men - men who were controlling, jealous, paranoid and possessive. Kelly felt she was a magnet for them, thinking she could somehow change them and ease their anguish with devotion and undying love. Not that she didn’t have any flaws of her own: she too had a quick temper and could flare into a rage unexpectedly.

Nor was Kelly known for her tact, often saying what was on her mind before she had time to think. More than once feelings were hurt by the venom she could spit out. Swearing like a sailor was not unusual for her either. ‘Language enhancers’ she had called them once, when her brother had been on the receiving end of one of her tirades. They had both laughed hysterically until their eyes watered.

Kelly was suddenly jerked from her daydreams by a flash of light. The kind of light you might see from a lighthouse, moving and then disappearing again. Only this seemed to be pulsating.. She could see it moving through her side window. Slowing down, she pressed the control to lower it. Now at a compete stop, she could see where the light was coming from. High in the night sky was a round, swirling light, which was oscillating and growing larger with every rotation. No sound came from this phenomenon, only a feeling of the air being sucked upwards.

Kelly could feel the air in the car start to move and push out. Panicked, she closed the window. She couldn’t even begin to imagine where this might be coming from. A UFO did not even cross her mind as one might think. This was not being made by anything she would be able to identify. She had the innate feeling this was not benign. Being led on pure adrenalin, she instinctively put the SUV in gear to put some distance between her and the swirling mass of energy. No sooner had she put it in drive, than the massive vortex with its churning suction jerked the vehicle violently while turning it 180 degrees. Within a split second it was hurled upward into the pulsating hole.

Her whole body felt as if it was being turned inside out. Spinning out of control, Kelly briefly thought that this what it must be like to be launched in a rocket when her mind went dark.

DEATH STAR. OUTER RIM

In the control room, Admiral Motti stood with his hands behind his back. A frown furrowed his brow as he studied the ComScan monitor. The test had not gone as planned. The Commander would not be pleased. Never mind what Lord Vader would think! Part of the Death Star's reactor had caused a misfiring of the super laser which in turned created an unexpected anomaly in space.

“ComScan is picking up fragment readings within the vortex, Admiral,” the young Lieutenant Gilvany said as he turned in his chair to meet Admiral Motti‘s glare.

The Admiral was silent as the officer continued, “It looks like it may be bringing something back with it. It’s trajectory is headed straight for us. Shall I inform Commander Tarkin and Lord Vader?.”

Motti considered this. If he did not summon Lord Vader, he would pay dearly for it later. No use hiding his mistake - better to take the heat now and own up to this mess. His chest tightened as he thought about being in the presence of the Sith Lord. His dislike for Vader was, for all purposes, apparent amongst all who came into contact with him. He made no secret about his displeasure with Vader’s presence on board the Death Star and he had verbally expressed this to Commander Tarkin. The Commander in turn reminded Motti that it was the Emperor’s wish that Vader represent him on the Death Star’s maiden voyage.

Now this! When he was so close to proving that this battle station was the ultimate power, a flaw had to show itself. Ah, no use bitching about it now, he thought, just deal with Vader and fix the problem as soon as possible.

“Yes, Lieutenant. Send word immediately. We need to know where on this station the vortex will hit. Lord Vader will want all the answers when he arrives!” Motti replied behind clenched teeth and seething anger.

Lord Vader sat in his meditation chamber with the lights out, save for a few glowing red on his master console. His eyes closed, he sensed a ripple in the Force. It was small, but significant enough to warrant further probing. Something’s coming his mind told him. He pushed his mind further into the vast threads of the dark side, looking for a clear picture of what was to come. His meditation was interrupted by a signal from the control room.

“What is it?!” he asked in a low baritone, letting his voice show his annoyance.

“My Lord, Admiral Motti requests your presence in the control room. There was a flaw in our testing of the laser and it has caused a vortex which is headed straight for us. There is something coming through though we do not have any data for yet.” the voice reported.

“Very well, tell the Admiral I be there presently,” Vader replied as he waved a gloved hand, summoning the hydraulic arms which replaced his breath mask and helmet.

With a loud grinding noise and a hiss of escaping air, the dome shaped chamber opened. The Sith Lord stepped out with his massive black cape flowing behind him and headed toward his destination.

After the Commander, Motti, and Lord Vader met in the control room, final calculations were finished and it was determined that the vortex would drop it’s cargo in the open area of the hanger bay. The vortex seemed to be bringing something from quite a distance. Analysts calculations showed it to be twisting, turning and sometimes slowing down, then increasing with massive energy to reach its final destination.

Troops and crew members quickly assembled in the open hanger bay. Just a predicted, the swirling and pulsating light pushed itself into the opening and Kelly’s SUV was hurled across the hanger, spinning as it crashed into the back wall. A loud crunching was heard, accompanied by the sound of air bags being released. Brown smoke flowed from the hood of the vehicle. Immediately crew members doused the front of this twisted metal with flame retardant foam. Stormtroopers strategically placed themselves around the unknown intruder. They would have seen Kelly strapped unconscious in her seat if it had not been for the privacy glass.

First there was the faint realization that she had stopped moving but her head was still spinning.
Vertigo. That’s what this is, she thought. Opening her eyes, it took her a few tries to focus by repeated blinking. She was vaguely aware she had hit a wall and it was well lit wherever she was. The belt had locked up and it held her tight against the seat. The air bags had saved her from hitting her head on the steering wheel, and the side bag had inflated preventing her from being sheared by the door where it had bent inward when it came in contact with the wall.

Releasing the seatbelt and pushing the airbags out of her way, Kelly was finally able to take in her surroundings. And it didn’t look good.

“What the Fuck!” she cried as she looked in astonishment at the scene in front of her.

There were, what she assumed to be numerous men in white armor with guns surrounding her. In back of them were more men with black uniforms also pointing their weapons directly at her! Still reeling from her ordeal and not thinking clearly, she slid over to the passenger side, pulled the door handle and pushed.

Lord Vader stood in the hanger bay several meters away from the still unidentified vehicle. He was flanked by storm troopers on either side. He kept his right arm crossed ready to unhitch his light saber if needed. Although he didn’t think it would be necessary, he did not plan on taking any unnecessary chances.

The rebels were very clever. This could turn quickly if they were not prepared for the worst. His enhanced receptors picked up movement inside. He sensed that whoever or whatever was inside was planning an exit. The door suddenly swung open. Instinctively the storm troopers went into battle mode, some in a prone position.

“Set your weapons for stun!” Vader commanded.

If it was a rebel, he wanted them alive. This could prove to be a most interesting day yet.

A body moved out of the vehicle, hidden behind the door. Stormtroopers in the back had already had a look at who was coming out and held their fire. A unarmed woman was not to be shot at, but if she proved to have a weapon, then firing was an option. As soon as Kelly made her way around the door, she paused on unsteady legs. She realized too late that getting up on her feet after her unwelcome trip was a mistake. Her whole body become like rubber and a tingling feeling moved down her entire being.

Her heart pounding in her chest, her eyesight reduced to tunnel - vision despite her eyes being open. Kelly’s vision was gradually being blocked by blackness. She was aware of a very tall, black caped figure moving toward her, and taking his place before her.

Her last thought before the darkness once again took over, as she fell at his feet, was, ‘Amazing!’.
