Their eyes met across the small crowd of Senators and Jedi that had gathered to welcome back Obi-Wan. Anakin let out a silent breath, a breath that he had not even been aware he was holding. Although he knew his Master would fare well without him even in the toughest of battles, he still did not like the idea of not being at his side, not even for the smallest mission.

Anakin, still holding Obi-Wan’s gaze, started toward the man but was stopped by the unexpected arrival of his wife, Senator Amidala. Apparently, she thought it was a good idea to come and greet Obi-Wan as well. Anakin watched as Obi-Wan caught sight of her as well. One part of him wanted to run to Obi-Wan and engulf him in his strong embrace. The weeks that had gone by felt like years to Anakin. The other part of him wanted to run to Padme and make it very clear that he did not want her here. She had been busy in the past few weeks, not at all able to spend any time with Anakin, and yet now that Obi-Wan was back, now that he did not need her, she had the time.

Padme started for Obi-Wan first. She went to him and engulfed him in a hug, a gesture of welcome and of good will. Obi-Wan put his charming smile on and politely excused himself from her embrace. He looked briefly towards Anakin before he walked away, the small crowd now leading him into the nearby Senate building. Padme turned and glanced at her husband, a look of victory on her face. Anakin gritted his teeth and sprinted towards where Obi-Wan had gone, leaving Padme standing alone.

Anakin’s long legs carried him quickly over to Obi-Wan and his small crowd of well-wishers. He saw a warm, broad smile come over Obi-Wan’s face when he approached. His heart soared, he wanted to welcome him home, to cover him in the needy, hungry kisses he had been saving in the weeks gone by. He waited for the last few onlookers to depart and approached his Master at last. He looked him up and down and back again, checking to see if everything was in order. He leaned in close, wanting to cover the man with those kisses, though he settled for a great big bear hug. They were, after all, in the hallway of a public building, a public building where someone was bound to see them. And see them someone did.

Master Yoda came toward them, a stern look on his green face. Anakin released Obi-Wan from his embrace and looked deep into his eyes. He knew that look, knew what it said. He left Obi-Wan to deal with Master Yoda and tried as quickly as possible to make his way back to their quarters. On the way he passed the same docking bay where he had left Padme standing alone moments earlier. She sensed him coming and turned to look at him. In her eyes were tears, tears that she refused to let fall, tears that she did not want Anakin to see. He stopped and looked back at her. He knew he should go to her, knew that the tears were there. She continued to stare at him, the salty droplets still contained in her brown eyes. He looked down at the ground beneath him and walked away. He never saw the tears finally fall from her eyes.

Anakin quickly made his way back to the quarters he shared with Obi-Wan. There he waited, impatiently and silently for the man he loved, the man he had just chosen over his wife, the man who had become his life. He paced back and forth in the room, never once even thinking about Padme. The only thoughts on his mind were of devouring his Master when he walked through that door.

Finally, Obi-Wan entered, pausing at the threshold. There he stood for a moment, lingering, taking the time to look up and down his Padawan. He let his gaze move down slowly over Anakin’s body, and even more slowly back up again, only stopping at those gorgeous blue eyes. There were no words exchanged, there was no need. An unspoken desire coursed through both of them and silent electricity filled the air. Obi-Wan stepped away from the door and let it gently close. Soon there were lips upon lips and tongues vying for position. There were hands calloused from battle removing layers of proper Jedi attire. There was ragged breathing and the sound of two bodies, each slick with sweat, becoming one.

They continued their silent assault on each other, unaware that the door to their quarters had never properly closed. There, in the doorway, stood Padme, silently watching her husband and his Master, his obvious lover. She turned and left. She silently admitted defeat that day. She let her husband go, as she knew he had let her go.
