Chapter One: Peek-a-boo

Poppy watched from her study window as the moving truck backed into the neighbours driveway. Two burly men in white t-shirts jumped out of the cab and opened the back of the dark green truck. One of the men opened the front door of the house while the other climbed into the back of the van.

Poppy leaned over her desk, as far as possible, her face inches from the window as she stretched to see what the men were offloading. A huge king-size bed was first, followed by what looked like an expensive mahogany table and a black leather sofa. “They must have some money...” She murmured quietly to herself, wondering if the new neighbours were young or old.

After ten minutes, Poppy’s back began to ache from the position so she got up and went downstairs to the kitchen, where she could cook her dinner while standing in front of the window.

The removal men must have been getting to the back of the truck because they were taking longer each time.

A gorgeous black BMW with tinted windows pulled up beside the removal truck on the driveway and Poppy paused in peeling a carrot to watch as the door opened and an attractive man, wearing Ray Bans with his hair tied back in a ponytail, stepped out of the car. ‘Phwoar.’

The man sauntered over to one of the removal men who had just walked out of the front door and handed him a wad of cash. He said something, making the removal man laugh before going into the house. The men offloaded a couple more boxes before shutting the truck and leaving.

Poppy shrugged lightly and leaned closer to the window, trying to see into his kitchen window which was opposite to hers, twenty feet away. She squinted, trying to see in and squealed when he stepped in front of the window. Poppy looked down in embarrassment and glanced back up, relieved to find he hadn’t spotted her and was only washing his hands at the sink. She took a few deep breaths to get her heart rate down again. The man stepped back from his sink and went further into the house, disappearing from view.

Poppy was undressing, ready for bed when something in her mind clicked. She was supposed to have found some papers from her filing cabinet to get her client to sign, the next day. Poppy rushed out of her room and down the hall in her light pink lacy bra and knickers, knowing that if she left it until morning, she would forget them and her client would be up sh.it street. She opened the study door and flicked on the light, going to the filing cabinet, opening the top drawer and standing on tiptoes, flicking through the files.

Poppy shivered as she felt goose bumps rise on her skin, which felt strange, because it was the middle of summer and sweltering hot. She scowled as she got the back of the filing cabinet, not finding the papers she needed. She shut the drawer and walked over to her desk, leaning down and thumbing through the files she left on her desk earlier.

She shivered.

Poppy absently looked up, over to the new neighbour’s window and yelped, jumping and dropping the papers she was holding. The man she had seen moving in was standing right at the window, looking at her, his sunglasses still on his face. Poppy crouched to the floor in embarrassment, hiding from him behind her desk. “Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my God...” Poppy scrambled to pick up the papers and kept on her hands and knees, crawling out of the room, mumbling swear words to herself. She stood up in the hall and reached her arm around inside the study, flicking the light off.

She kept still for a few seconds, even though she knew he couldn’t see her because all the lights were off. Slowly, her head peeked around into the study and she squeaked to see him still standing there. Keeping still, she watched as he raised his arm and scratched the back of his neck, smirking before turning around and pulling his t-shirt off just as he moved away from the window. Poppy felt her face flush. ‘Oh my God. He’s going to think I’m some pervy neighbour. No, wait-he was the one looking!’

She felt her way to her desk in the dark and opened her laptop, fumbling for the ‘on’ button. Poppy went back into her room and wrapped her gown around her before going back into the study and sitting down, turning on the desk lamp. She opened messenger and opened a conversation with her friend Jeff, who was also a lawyer. Her boss had recommended she go on a forum for lawyers over a year ago and her and Jeff had gotton chatting. Even though they had never met, they were best friends and had chatted almost every night since.

Poppy picked up the phone on the second ring, “Whatcha.”

It was Jeff, “ How goes work?”

“My head hurts from paperwork.”

“Ditto.”

“My boss got me a MAJOR case next month. Apparently I’m up against one of the most ruthless lawyers in the state. Why me?” She whined.

“Because you’re good at what you do? Dur-brain.”

Poppy chuckled, “ Thanks, Grandpa Joe.”

“Oi!”

Poppy chuckled to herself, wondering if she should mention about the little incident with her neighbour. She sunk lower into her chair as her neighbour walked past the window, shirtless.

“My neighbour is so hot.”

“Eyes?”

“Not sure. Maybe brown.”

“Hair?”

“Brown”

“Body?”

“To die for. I’m melting in a puddle of goo over here.”

“And you haven’t made a move?”

“Well I haven’t really spoken to him.”

“So go over there and ask him for coffee or something.”

“Maybe. Busy day tomorrow-I’m off to bed.”

“I’m sure you are.”

“I am!”

“Yeah right.” Jeff scoffed.

“You’re so...annoying.”

“Isn’t it great? Goodnight, Sugar.”

“Yeah yeah”

“Have fun”

Poppy snorted and switched off the computer, feeling her way back to her room in the dark.
