Chapter 1: The Little Red Book
In the middle of a quiet city of sleepy civilians was one very lonely, rowdy apartment. Two sisters, Kerri and Keaira, along with their best friend Sarah were the occupants of the lively house. Kerri was 19; she had wavy dark brown hair to the small of her back, vibrant green eyes, and was wearing a black long sleeve top with a corset and jeans. Her feet were adorned with cowboy boots that arrived to her mid-calf. Keaira was 18, with wavy dark brown hair down to her mid back, sapphire blue eyes, a blue, low-cut long sleeve shirt which were wing-like and a black pair of jeans. Her movements were complimented by the loud clicking of her dark blue stilettos of five inches high. Sarah was also 18, with dark brown hair to her mid back and hazel eyes; she was wearing a tight, black t-shirt that had Little Princess written in silver along with a pair of blue jeans. She had sandal like stilettos of three inches high. They had just come back from a fun night on the town and were still very restless, which explained their party look.
“You seemed to be very popular at the bar tonight!” Kerri stated to Sarah as they entered into the living room.
“Yeah, well no one special.” She blatantly replied.
“You mean no one who measures up to a certain someone.” Keaira shot back.
“Might I ask to whom you’re referring?”
“Jareth!” said the sister’s in chorus.
“Jareth is special. He’s the one who caused me to be traumatized and nearly killed me on several occasions in the 13 hours we had been around each other.” Sarah fired at her friends, feeling anger slowly starting to consume her. How dare they bring up a time they know nothing about? Wanting to avoid this conversation, she calmed down and said: “I need a shower. I’ll be back shortly.” With that, she made her way to the bathroom.
Keaira and Kerri both looked at each other, knowing the tension that conversation brought to Sarah. The adventure through the labyrinth happened four years ago yet everyone knew that she hadn’t completely gotten over it, no matter how much Sarah tried to deny it. When she had returned, she had told the story of the ordeal in complete detail to only three people, Kerri, Keaira and Toby. Although Toby was too young to understand what had happened, he enjoyed the story all the same so it seemed worth the time to tell. Kerri and Keaira, being old enough to not believe in fairy tales anymore had questioned the story. After noticing the emotion that the story invoked in Sarah they knew that there was no way that she had invented it.
Sarah had a changed a fair amount since that whole story began. Guys that she was crushing on were but a mere memory to her. She did have the odd boyfriend but they didn’t last more than two weeks. Every time they asked Sarah what had happened between her and the flavor of the time, she would come up with some random reason that made no sense to anyone who knew her. Hot guys would flirt with her and she would do very little to hint at a possible attraction, even those that seemed like amazing people.
Her imagination also faded with the escapade. As if afraid that things out of the ordinary would bring her back to the labyrinth, she grew up and stopped playing with toys, costumes and even went so far as to never watch movies, television and plays. Reading even became a chore but she still managed to do it. It was mostly in her conscious mind that she dismissed all imagination. If she got involved in something unrealistic; there was no stopping her until her logic kicked back in and she got lost in reality once again. With the changes in her personality, the siblings began to suspect her need for Jareth in her life, no matter what Sarah said there was no other way to explain it.
After a few silent moments, Keaira got up and started for Sarah’s room. Kerri, filled with curiosity, asked her sister as to what she was doing.
“I’m simply going to make Sarah’s subconscious dream come true and end this charade once and for all. I will wish myself away to the Goblin King. Then, Sarah will have no choice but to face Jareth and, eventually, her feelings.”
“How do you figure?”
“Sarah went through the labyrinth once for Toby and I doubt that she would leave me, one of her best friends, in the Goblin Kingdom, for him to do what he will. She might hate the man, or whatever he is but she would face the worst dangers and fears for those who mean anything to her.”
“Well, let’s look for that book and we will BOTH wish ourselves away. There’s no way that I’m letting you be the only one with an adventure. Plus, if we both go, it will give her more incentive to want to face him and get us back.” They both began to laugh.
They searched for a good five minutes, under her bed, in her sock drawer, even in the most obvious place, her bookcase; the book was still nowhere to be found. Giving up on a childish hope, they returned to the living room, disappointed with themselves.
Seeing that it was 11 o’clock, they realized how hungry they were, drinking really took a toll on someone. They decided to order a pizza but because they had no money, Kerri went and took the money out of Sarah’s purse. “She won’t mind…” they thought to themselves. Beside her wallet, Kerri found the unlikeliest things. A red leather covered book. Once she pulled it out and turned it to see the book cover, she read the fine golden writing forming the word Labyrinth.
She stared at the cover for a few moments before her sibling asked why the surprised look. From where Keaira was sitting, the book simply looked like an address book and she didn’t understand the look on her sister’s face. Kerri merely turned the book towards Keaira, who hung up the phone on the pizza man, in shock and full of excitement. Keaira jumped over the top of the sofa out of sheer ecstasy. Not only was something magical and odd going to happen but she had the chance to escape the misery her life had become and make someone else’s life a brighter place. Kerri opened the book and they scanned the pages as quickly as they could for the words that would forever change their lives. Kerri soon found the speech.
“Goblin King, Goblin King, wherever you may be, take me away to the Goblin City…” Afterwards, they waited for lightning, darkness, sparkles, anything to indicate something magical happening. Nothing, Keaira looked back at the book and continued to read noticing that they had chosen the first way Sarah had said it which was the wrong way. Soon enough, her finger fell upon the correct incantation and they began.
“I wish the goblins would come and take us away right now.” They said together. As soon as they finished, thunder and lightning started outside, the lights went out and they were nowhere to be seen.
