Chapter 1
Captain Pike looked out his window and frowned down at the lawn of Starfleet Academy. The girl was down there again. A young African woman with long straight hair was sitting on the quad reading and taking notes; just as she had done every single day for the past several months. Not that he was opposed to her studying, after all Captain Pike was a teacher at the academy; but this young girl took it to an extreme. He had never seen her relax at all and he had been watching her for awhile now. Cadet N, Uhura did not seem to spend any time in other pursuits. Her professors all remarked what an excellent student she was; even requesting extra assignments for more work. Pike was afraid that this girl would burn out soon. He must find a way to get her to relax. Just then his door chimed.
“Come.” He said and turned to greet the most distinguished alumni the school had and a man not unlike the studious girl he had just been watching.
“Ah, Commander Spock, right on time. Good, good, come on in. Can I offer you anything?”
“No thank you sir.” Spock answered. He stood at attention in front of the Captain's desk, his hands behind him.
“Commander, I must make apologies for what I am about to ask. I fear this may not be something you will… well I am going to order you to do something for me that you may not like.”
“I do not understand, Sir. If you order me to do something there is no emotion involved with the response of that order. I will do as commanded. To expect otherwise would be illogical.”
“Ah, yes, of course, Spock I did not mean that you would refuse an order only that you may be annoyed by one.”
“Annoyance is a human emotion of which I do not feel sir.”
“Of course. Spock, look out the window.” The captain said moving back toward his desk. Spock did as he was told and wondered at being asked to do this. “Do you see the young woman studying down there?”
“Yes, Captain.”
“That same girl had studied right there every day except when she is in class from dawn to dusk. She needs to find a way to relax and let go of the academia even for a short while or she will burn out.”
“I am not understanding why you wanted me here to witness this cadet.” Spock responded raising his eyebrow at his captain.
“Spock, I brought you here because you were a very studious cadet and you studied every bit as much but yet you found your own way to relax.”
“I do not relax, Captain, relaxation would require emotions including tension which being Vulcan, I do not experience those emotions.”
Christopher Pike smiled at his commander. “Forgive me for my statement, Spock, I meant no offense…”
“There is no offense, Sir, that would be illogical, I was merely stating fact.”
“I just meant that you might know of activities not related to studies that you could share with her. Her name is Cadet Uhura and I want you to seek her out and help her, give her someone to talk to.”
“Captain, I am puzzled. Why do you wish for me to help this cadet? There must be others with far higher…humanity in order to help her.”
“I think you two may find that you have a bit in common. I think she will relate to you far more than anyone else. You may find Cadet Uhura after her next class in Romulan I In three hours. That will be all.”
“Thank you sir.” Spock said and left the room with a snap in his step.
Pike smiled. He hoped that he was doing the right thing and helping out both Spock and Cadet Uhura. He knew that they were likely to have a good bit in common. He wanted them both to relax a little. While the Vulcan relaxed in his own ways there was always the chance to find happiness instead of mere relaxation.
Nyota collected her belongings after class and carefully packed her bag. Her classmates laughed and talked as they left the room but no one said anything to her. A few had made attempts early on in the year but since she never responded to any invitations they soon stopped. Nyota never even spoke to her roommate. She hadn’t spoken to anyone with the exception of her professors in months.
It wasn’t that Nyota didn’t want to have friends but no one seemed to understand her. She was so set on always getting top grades and her dream was to serve on a starship. Nothing was going to stand in her way. People always expected her to be a party girl or stupid because of her appearance. She was a very beautiful girl with waist length black hair and warm brown eyes with an athletic body. She got tired of always being seen wrong so she always studied and ignored everyone.
As she reached the door, Nyota kept her eyes down. “Cadet Uhura, a word please.” She heard a silky deep voice say. She turned and raised her eyes to find the Vulcan commander, Spock standing behind her.
“Yes sir?” Nyota said with confusion. She knew who Spock was, everyone did. He was the most distinguished graduate from the academy. He taught several classes but she didn’t have any of those yet. She noticed that Spock was standing erectly and had his hands folded behind his back almost at attention. He was a handsome Vulcan, his ears slightly tipped up, his skin very pale with a very slight green tinge. His hair was cut in the severe bowl cut that all Vulcans favored, with a full lower lip and slightly less full upper. He had a strong nose and warm chocolate eyes but looked coldly at her.
“I have been asked by Captain Pike to speak with you. Would you be agreeable to appearing in my office at 20:00 hours this evening?”
“Of course, Sir, may I ask what this is regarding?”
“We will discuss that this evening Cadet. I trust you can find my quarters?”
“Sir, am I in trouble?” Nyota asked.
“I have already stated that we will discuss that this evening, is something wrong with your auditory functions? I believe you are a xenolinguistic major which would rely on your auditory health.”
Nyota snapped to attention at his tone. “No, Sir, my hearing is fine. I was merely requesting to know the topic as we have never conversed before and although I am aware of who you and Captain Pike are; I have never met either of you, Sir. I was curious, wouldn’t you be?”
“Cadet Uhura, I do not feel the emotion you are describing. I made a request of you which I am now making an order. Do you in anyway not understand this?”
“No sir.”
“I repeat my question, can you find my quarters?”
“Yes sir.”
“Then I will see you at the designated time. Dismissed.” He watched as the female cadet stiffly walked away.
